Sister John Elizabeth Callaghan, an Oblate Sister of St. Francis de Sales and principal of Mount Aviat Academy in Childs, Md., gave a presentation on how her school is using the state’s pre-kindergarten expansion grant.
It was presented at the May 14 spring meeting of the Maryland Catholic Conference in Annapolis.
The grant is a program administered by the Division of Early Childhood at the Maryland State Department of Education. It provides funding for local education agencies and private providers to administer high-quality pre-kindergarten and school readiness services throughout the state for children and their families in alignment with the “Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.”
Sister John Elizabeth said the purpose of the grant is to broaden availability and expand access to high-quality prekindergarten educational programming and school readiness services for three- and four-year-old students from families with household incomes up to 300% of federal poverty level.
Attendees at the meeting included Wilton Cardinal Gregory, archbishop of Washington; Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore; Bishop William E. Koenig of Wilmington; auxiliary bishops from Washington and Baltimore and clergy and lay leaders from across Maryland.
