The Eye On Art Program at the Ion — Houston’s innovation hub powered by Rice University — will celebrate two new installations and a monumental piece of artwork in the plaza at a free May 15 preview party.
The two window installations are “Primordial Seas” by Pavlina Vagioni and “Baking Soda” by Hillerbrand + Magsamen. These artists were chosen via an open call to Houston-area- only artists to submit their ideas and qualifications. The plaza artwork “Waves” by Hyperlocal, the duo of Zhicheng Xu and Moon Mengqi He, was selected through an open call for Texas-based artists.
The Eye On Art Program installations are an adaptive reuse of the historic Sears building on which the Ion was built, and the display windows are a unique opportunity to reimagine Sears’ store windows and build on the collective imagination of the space’s past, present and future. Strategically placed as the entry points and eyes of the building, the two highly visible display windows facing Fannin and Main streets serve as beacons to draw in the community.
The May 15 celebration will take place at Second Draught within the Ion. Lite bites will be provided by The Lymbar and Late August with drinks provided by Second Draught.
As part of the Ion’s vision to be the home for Houston’s innovation community, the diverse programming aims to cultivate a transformative culture of people, places, ideas and experiences that build the world we want to see, creating a better quality of life for all of Houston.
