During his career, this Academy Award–nominated director and choreographer showcased the talents of stars such as Gene Kelly, Doris Day, Debbie Reynolds, and Frank Sinatra. In the first full-length biography of Walters, Brent Phillips chronicles the artist's career, from his days as a featured Broadway performer and protégé of theater legend Robert Alton to his successes at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He takes readers behind the scenes of many of the studio's most beloved musicals, including Easter Parade (1948), Lili (1953), High Society (1956), and The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964). If I could have time with a Hollywood star, I would want it to be Chuck. He would be interested in me before I could open my mouth. Think about this: Garbo would run away. Hepburn would be peculiar. Lana would dance, good. Crawford would be so stiff and posed. Ginger? My point is that the biggest stars would not be the best friends to hang out with. Never mind me doing the male stars. Though I would have enjoyed trying to find out what made Henry Fonda tick, but I think Stanwyk seemed up to the task in ''The Lady Eve''.
I wish I could have known Chuck. He was a man that could charm the pants off of any man or woman he desired. He was careful. He is teaching grace Kelley how to be graceful on the cover of the book: and he still looks like a man. I am positive Walters wanted a private life. The book addresses Walters private life, without saying very much. No great detail. Normal pains and disappointments of life. His death. Unless someone finds some letters, or unknown film, there is nothing more to know. Oh a lot to miss by not knowing him. But we have his films, and the author explains to the reader the detail and work and frustration Walters lovingly gave to his films. He made Judy be Judy when she didn't want to be, and when Judy wanted to be Judy he was there! So then we can enjoy Judy and not see the terror or mirth behind the image out there. Walters could turn a dumb movie ''Tender Trap'' in to a film that never allows the viewer to get bored with it,,,,, even though I want to leave it, each time they show it,,, I look. I can not look away.
Chuck seemed to know when to stop. For me Lucille Ball doesn't seem a stretch to do ''Mame''. Had Charles Walters directed ''Mame''. It would have been a different picture, that is what art is about, what artists do. Thank you Brent Phillips for answering almost all my questions, thanks for not saying too much. I must thank the writer for the hard work ,,,,,, believe me: there wasn't much on Charles Walters, unless you were watching one of his films.
He usually worked with performers who were already established, and managed to keep them afloat, tailoring to their talents. The one exception was Leslie Caron, who was still on the rise, and who had her stardom cemented by Lili, which is one of the few films that did show a more emotional, personal Walters stamp, for which he was rewarded an Oscar nomination. This biography uncovered interesting factoids, such as his unheralded work on Gigi, his lack of rapport with Debbie Reynolds and Vera-Ellen, and his pre-film career on Broadway.
Walters was a very private man, reminding me a little of Hermes Pan, as both allowed others to hog the spotlight, while working steadily for decades, Walters living more openly as a gay man than Pan was able to do. This book successfully resurrects a neglected and underrated talent, and does much to give due credit to Walters for his many contributions to entertainment.
