Brazilian metal band Sepultura have released a new take on their 18 year old track ‘Apes Of God’, which was originally released in 2003 on the album ‘Roorback’. ‘Apes Of God’ was also recorded with guitarist Rob Cavestany from Death Angel.
Max and Igor Cavalera formed Sepultura way back in 1984, during this time the band have had numerous line-up changes, which is expected given the timescale of how long the band has been going for.
The current lineup is Derrick Green on vocals, Andreas Kisser on guitars, Paulo Pinto Jr on bass and drummer Eloy Casagrande.
They have released in total, 15 studio albums and it does not end there.
During the weekly podcast, SepulQuarta, discussions took place covering a wide range of topics. Friends like Devin Townsend, Matt Heafy and Danko Jones, were invited to play classic Sepultura tunes, they then collectively compiled them all together resulting in a 15 tracked, full length album which will be released on August 13th 2021 via Nuclear Blast.
During the current situations with the pandemic, it has been difficult for most bands to do anything, even rehearse, particularly if members live in different countries, these limitations haven’t seemingly slowed Sepultura down though.
In their video for ‘Apes Of God’ each band member is in different house settings making it feel intimate, the band is just cracking on, releasing some incredible music.
I admired this new take on ‘Apes Of God’ but struggled to decide which one I preferred as they are equally good as each other. The pace is more accelerating with the new version, the cymbals are definitely more prominent too, they slash and crash through the single, allowing the track to feel authentic and really industrial.
As you follow the riffage, you can hear the low deep bass tones and they are turned right up. The bass holds the track tightly together, giving it a bit of a heavier stomping sound.
Rob Cavestany’s melodic passage is just pinpoint perfection and seeps through crisp and clear, precisely playing those few notes simply and with elegance.
The vocals are definitely on par with the original version, Greens gnarls offer a full-on attack and full of rage; his modern edge has definitely given Sepultura a more evolving sound.
Maybe I am the only one but I do get doomy black metal feels when the drop kicks in, I can visualize a sea of headbangers when they play this live, it’s going to kick right off.
I, as many are excited for this SepulQuarta album release and all I will say is don’t be late on this one guys because there is a string of UK tour dates coming up in late November, starting in Wolverhampton.
