Looking for good movies as a newcomer

Movie Help

Hi guys,

I'm looking for some good horror movies that are on DisneyPlus and Netflix.

I watched and liked stuff like Fresh, No one will save you, Scream, Paranormal Activity, Terrifier, (Jennifers Body), 28 weeks later, The Ritual, A quiet place, (the purge), Cloverfield,...

I didn't like IT, The popes exorcist, smile, The hills have eyes, I spit on your grave...

I guess I'm more into the softer kind of horror movies, aliens and paranormal stuff.

Ready or not is on my watch list.

Thanks :)

Hey, welcome to the club! I hope you enjoy Ready or Not! I love that movie! It’s hard for me to gauge your tastes here, so I’ll just recommend some movies that I enjoy watching:

Grave Encounters

Ghost Ship

Thir13en Ghosts

House on Haunted Hill (both versions)

The Frighteners

Fright Night (1985)

1408

Have fun exploring the world of horror!

Not a movie, but The Haunting of Hill House is good if you like the softer side and it’s on Netflix.

Nope

Fear street

Bodies bodies bodies

Fright night (2011)

Child's play

Us

Get out

Almost always, I tell newer horror fans that want to start light to start with the classics. I say "Scream" (1996), "Halloween" (1978). If you want more than a slasher, I point to the black-and-white era of the 30s and 40s, so stuff like "The Wolfman" (1941), or peak Vincent Price like "House on Haunted Hill" (1959).

If someone wants campy fun, I point them to some of the silly movies from the '80s like "Critters" (1986). If someone wants to be genuinely terrified, I say start with "Get Out" (2017), or "Hellraiser" (1987).

I could go for hours as you see lol but there is so many great gateway horror movies, it's all a matter of what mood you're in. If you're looking for modern, I'd say test out stuff like "Renfield" (2023), "Paranormal Activity" (2007) or "Orphan" (2009) to see where your line is.

Hope that helps 😁

Edit: I re-read your post and saw you put Disney Plus. I highly recommend "Werewolf by Night" (2022). It's light horror, and it's marvel. It is good.

Thank you so much! There's a lot I haven't watched so I might start with the classics.

Werewolf by night is pretty good. Loved the black and white ambiance.

See, I disagree on Scream. There are so many references that a person new to horror won't be familiar with. And they might come away thinking so-and-so's "scary movie" rules are a legitimate thing.

Plus, OP says they prefer paranormal/supernatural.

Get Out (2017)

The Thing (1982)

It was pretty funny to see Terrifier as a soft kind of horror.

Thanks!

Terrifier was pretty funny and I couldn't take it too serious lol. Pretty hyped for the 3rd one.

Have you watched the series, The X-Files? They have a couple movies too.

Based on Jennifer's Body, I'm going to recommend a few of my possession faves:

  • Attachment

  • The Blackcoat's Daughter

  • Stigmata

You might also be into PG-13 horror:

  • The Others

  • The Ring

  • The Sixth Sense
