Lydia Hackman was born Anna Lyda Elizabeth Gray on 13 May 1905, in Lambton, Lambton County, Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of Joseph William Gray and Beatrice Anna Gray. Her siblings are Ellen called Nellie P Gray, Frank J Gray, Joseph Francis Gray, Robert Kenneth Gray, Olive May Gray, Richard Louis Gray, Margaret Leslie Gray, and Beatrice Penrose Gray.

Lydia Hackman was Canadian. She is said to have worked as a waitress. She was married to Eugene Ezra Hackman. Eugene operated the printing press for the Commercial News, a local paper. Lydia and her husband Eugene had two sons, Eugene Allen Hackman who became Gene Hackman and Richard Hackman. The family moved from one place to another before settling in Danville, Illinois.

She is said to have been an alcoholic. She reportedly did some drinking and passed out in bed with a lit cigarette which caused the fire. She was laid to rest at Montecito Memorial Park, Colton, San Bernardino County, California, USA. Her ex-husband Eugene Ezra Hackman died on 9 July 1973, at age 70.
