Nick Cassidy times it perfectly to secure victory in Berlin after chaotic finish to thrilling race

An exhilarating finish to Race 1 of the Berlin ePrix weekend saw Nick Cassidy take the win after a frantic middle period that saw the lead change a handful of times before he took control in the finale. After a late safety car the race was extended by six laps and the racing post-safety car was chaotic with a number of minor collisions but Cassidy timed his moves to perfection to take the win.

Nick Cassidy timed his winning effort to perfection to take victory in Berlin after driving through the pack from 21st to take victory.
The Jaguar driver took his second victory of the campaign to take the championship lead and set the fastest lap of the race.
Jean-Eric Vergne held off a closely grouped pack for second with Oliver Rowland placing third.
An eventful race saw two safety cars implemented after Joel Eriksson’s car stopped and pole setter Edoardo Mortara saw his car clipped into the wall.
With the result undecided a tense final five laps resulted in Jehan Daruvala crashing, but racing continued with debris on the course.
Amongst the chaos Cassidy came through the pack to race clear with just over two laps remaining and pulled out a winning margin.
Vergne had been fighting for the lead throughout and placed second, while Rowlands finished third.
“That was crazy,” said Cassidy. “It was great for the team, they were flawless all race, the comms and strategy were all perfect.
“I didn’t have the car to win today, but somehow we pulled it off.
Cassidy finished runner-up in the previous round at Monaco and victory saw him move into the overall championship lead.
Racing continues in Berlin tomorrow (Sunday) for round 10 of the series.
Driver of the day: Jean-Eric Vergne
The DS Penske driver finished on the podium for the second time this season after trying everything to take victory.
The Frenchman qualified in third and was present at the head of proceedings during a chaotic 46 laps of the Berlin course.
The wide sections of course made for exciting racing with the lead changing hands often and contenders coming and going.
However, Vergne was present throughout and avoided any trouble for a well earned second place.
Where the race was won and lost
11/40 – ERIKSSON STOPS
It’s a full course yellow after Eriksson’s car has come to a stop. The safety car is now out and the cars are in a single line circling the Berlin course as Eriksson’s car is being recovered
23/40 - DI GRASSI OUT
Di Grassi is out of contention after being hit from behind while in a pack of cars. His car is no longer drivable and he is out
29/40 - SAFETY CAR
It’s going to be race over for Nato who has to pit with a puncture. Moments later Gunther makes contact with Mortara and ends up in the wall.
Van Der Linde has smoke coming from his car and is immediately into the pit lane.
37/40 - DENNIS LOCKS UP AND PITS
Dennis locks his back wheels up going into a corner as he went in deep. He blocks his opponents and then has to pit with a flat tyre
The reigning champion sees his race ended.
43/46 - EVANS SLOWS
After seeing his attack mode end Evans has moved back down the pack as Vergne takes the lead from Rowland and Wehrlein.
Daruvala has crashed resulting in debris on the course, but no safety car or yellow flag.
44/46 - CASSIDY ATTACKS
Cassidy has gone for victory with two laps remaining. He has more energy then his competitors and is lapping faster than his rivals.
46/46 - CASSIDY WINS
Cassidy has taken victory as Vergne holds on after fending off attacks from Rowlands heading into the final corners.
