19h agoState Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-25) addressed the pressing issue of affordable housing shortage in Connecticut today, highlighting the increasing struggles faced by seniors and individuals with disabilities.
One such case is that of Juan Rivera from Bridgeport, an artist who recently lost a leg to diabetes and is facing eviction next month with nowhere to turn. His caregiver, Magda Ward, expressed grave concern over his ability to survive on the streets or in a shelter due to his numerous health conditions.
"It's driving me crazy. Where is he going to go?! It's killing me! He says, 'Oh, I will sleep in the car.' Fine, you'll sleep in the car -- but what about your medicines, your food -- what's he gonna do?" Ward lamented.
Duff acknowledged the imminent signing of a bill by Gov. Ned Lamont, potentially bringing more new housing developments to Connecticut. However, he emphasized the need for long term planning beyond this milestone, recognizing that the demand for new affordable housing in the state is at an all-time high.
