Edie Yvonne – Fade Into You (2024)

Known for her poetic melodies, originality, authenticity and just plain “you’re fantastic” aura, Edie Yvonne is quickly becoming a well-known name on the international stage. She caught people’s ears with her debut album, At Ease a few years back at the age of 13. Skip ahead to 2024 and the prodigious talent stands tall as an up-and-coming pop star. As with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in the 1990s, Yvonne captures the intricate core of adolescence today delving into the core of a teenager’s mind, but with sophistication and maturity beyond her years.

Typically Yvonne explores adolescent struggles and triumphs with original singles, such as ‘Girl Code’, ‘Darkness Bliss’ and ‘Delusion’; however, she is no stranger to covers. At the age of 10, Yvonne was invited by Kristin Kontrol to perform with a group of children at the Bootleg Theatre and shone with her cover of Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade Into You’ – quickly becoming her go-to cover.

30 years since its original release, ‘Fade Into You’ still holds a soul-stirring haunting in the wistful vocals and smooth arrangement; Yvonne adds a contemporary edge to the award-winning track. The alternative rock song is covered with silky modern-day pop. Acoustic-tinged with a hint of piano shivering along the melody, but slight electronic beats cling to the soul-stirring tune. Interestingly, a steady line of mystique persists in the old and new, transcending time, space and generations.

As Nirvana was dominated by the coarse vocals of Kurt Cobain, Mazzy Star’s intrigue lies in Hope Sandoval’s poignant whispers. In her off-kilter alto, she weaves dark melancholy with vulnerable sweetness. Edie Yvonne might not have the hushed desperation of Sandoval, but the peculiarity of her vocals adds new depth and diversity to ‘Fade Into You’.

With each decade of pop, one artist stands up among the rest– the 1980s had Madonna, the 1990s had the Spice Girls, and the 21st century has Beyonce. Edie Yvonne is the voice of her generation and will influence many musicians in the future, if not already.
