One of the most beautiful places in Chile! I found this place on a Google search as I was looking for a day trip from Santiago. It's about 2 hrs away but a pretty drive in the fall. The town is built on a hill and is a major port of the country. The old buildings are so colorful and pretty! There are lots of good seafood restaurants in the area. Very nice area to walk around. The roads are narrow and tough for cars. Some good viewpoints of the ocean and city as well. Need to come back to explore more!!

This hill is one of the most touristy parts of Valpo so you definitely should check it out, but you can skip the restaurants up there because you're paying for prime real estate instead of the food. It's certainly very colorful and you have to walk through it if you are on a walking tour.

Nice hill, plenty of little restaurants, there are some public terraces with bay view and lot of streets that go around rustic places. This is a very old city with history all around.

Walk this Neighbourhood. Valparaíso is not a beautiful city, but a rather badly maintained mix of architecture, while having the typical chaos and rowdiness of a traditional port city. Nevertheless the Cerro Concepción thrives in this, allowing the liberty of art and alternative lifestyles to express themselves here. Most houses are covered in graffiti art (or not so art), making for a pleasant walk along its narrow streets and many photo opportunities.

Quaint and eclectic little place, with a marvelous view!! Chilean Poet Pablo Neruda’s house is impressive. Five floors that get smaller as you go up! The collection of artifacts inside the house is cool! But, No inside pics allowed! The view is spectacular. You can see almost all of Valparaiso from up here. You can also see the pier where I moored the ship I Captained, the USS BOONE, in 2011!

Locations like this are the reason why i traveled. The history, the passion and dedication to Pablo's craft is amazing. Everything has a meaning a thought. I felt the energy.. the time invested. The price is fair and u get get an audio tour in multiple languages. You have to check it out!

Really interesting place, with an incredible interior and views over the town. Definitely recommend visiting. Multi language audio guide available (with English) which was helpful.

Excellent audio tour through this amazing house. The map was slightly disorienting at first but is much easier once you reach the living room. Very helpful staff on hand to explain things too. I knew Neruda’s name but was not familiar with his work. The design of the house itself justifies a visit, the view out over Valparaiso with the sea breeze coming in will stay with me for a very long time

It's a big yes. No photos allowed inside. If you walk from sea level to there, take water with you. The day when we visited there, toilets where out of service because no water. Also you must leave luggages to the storage and you gonna need coins for that.

This museum is a must-see of Valparaiso. The audio guides are extremely helpful to understand what we are seeing, and the place itself is astonishing. One of a kind! After the visit I absolutely wanted to know more about Neruda, his work and his life. You won't regret it!

It was a fun adventure taking bus 612 to the top of the Calle Ferrari to see the house where poet Pablo Neruda lived in Valparaiso. It is now a nice museum. The best part was getting the audioguide and listening to his life and achievements. The view from the terrace was great too.

If you have not heard of Pablo Neruda, probably Chile's greatest poet (politician, activist) you will after a visit to his eclectic multi-level home perched on the side of a hill overlooking Valparaíso Bay. It gives a good insight into his (unsurprisingly) eccentric life. There is an excellent audio guide that takes you through each part of teh home explaining various artefacts and the way Pablo lived. Worth a visit.

Ascensor Reina Victoria is a super fun little funicular railway in the heart of Valparaíso, Chile! It’s definitely worth visiting if you’re in this city as it’s a fun experience and provides great views. It is extremely old (built in 1902) but it still runs great. The area has a playground for children, seats, and streetlights, and it’s quite inexpensive to ride the funicular. It’s also in a great walking area for you to explore all the shops, restaurants, and street art! Definitely put this on your list of saved places!

My first ride up a slanted elevator with amazing views on the way up to the upper streets of Valparaiso. The wait time was long because the "Ascensor" could only hold 10 people, however it was on a Saturday, and tourists from everywhere flocked, not unlike myself to this unique mode of transportation

The Ascensor Reina Victoria in Valparaiso turned out to be quite overrated. It was even out of service when we arrived. However, the surrounding area boasts many excellent dining options. Do note that restaurants tend to close around 9:00 PM. Nevertheless, Cerro Concepcion offers stunning street art and murals, making it worth a visit despite the disappointing ascensor experience.

It’s a must do I guess but it was a one and done. Have taken the funicular in La Paz, now that’s a ride. This was more a curiosity. A 3 rating is too low, but a 4 is too high - giving it a 3 though because was had to wait quite a while in the car before it started - could have probably walked in the time it took.

What a great way to ascend the Concepcion hill! 100 CLP ticket that is paid in the bottom station. Recommended!

An interesting place to visit as tourist because of the view at dusk. Has criative and interesting graffiti around the top of Reina Victoria. Also has a slide (funny). The ascensor takes you to a hill full of colourful bars and cheering retaurants, beautiful graffiti and souvenir stores. Totally recommend going and eating in one of these restaurants.

Price 2023: 300 pesos one way

This is the oldest Ascensor. Built in 1883. It's also the shortest and the priciest ($300). Recommend either get up from Ascensor Reina Victoria & down from this one.

If you are in Valparaiso go up one of its ascensores or elevators/ lifts. We have taken both the Ascensor Artilleria and this one. The cost is 100 pesos each way. At the top of El Peral visit the Palacio Baburizza a good museum- see my review for photos. At the top of Artilleria, the great Naval Museum and a row of souvenir shops along the Paseo 21 de mayo - I also have a review. There are places to eat or buy fast food or candy at the top of both ascensores. Photos below are for both. I set 4 photos from Artilleria, set a sunset photo from our apartment to separate, and 3 from El Peral.

A must visit attraction in Santiago. There may be a queue for the inclinator may be longer on weekends and public holidays so it is worthwhile booking online. Once you are at the top the views are spectacular. It is well worth also buying a ticket for the gondola lift down the other side and return.

Great museum to learn more about the Chilean natural history and current situation. The permanent collection of taxidermy is matched with new modern infographs that look really good and give a lot of information. Only improvement that can be made is adding English translation is some way. Note that nowadays the museum closes early, at 5 o’clock due to the current situation in Chile.

Very good and well-maintained museum, beautifully and knowledgeably designed. It’s only in Spanish though and rather focused on kids than adults with simple explanations. Still worth a (free) visit though if you’re passing (like us).

Cute little museum with a nice local collection. Some of the taxidermy work is a little rough, but I really enjoyed going through the displays and learning about Chile's terrestrial and marine fauna - especially the cool deep sea specimens! Some signs are in English, but most are only in Spanish.

After seeing the local flora and fauna in the museo... Go get the best coffee in all of Chille in the Cafe. No instant or drip coffee there just real espresso machine with great barista/o. I drank my coffee here every morning for a week straight!

The museum provides a good collection of examples of Chilean Natural History. The displays are very informative and provide good context. Much of the museum is too geared towards children, however.

A piece of history, still untouched! A totally must do! Learn a bit about Chilean history and one of it's most important heroes. On the port you can go around the bay in one of the of the passenger boats and take amazing pics of the bay and the cargo ship. Several souvenir shops with a variety of items for you to take to family and friends. "El bote Salvavidas" great restaurant with a great variety of Chilean and International dishes at water's edge with a truly amazing view of the port. On same aerea you can also find the newest addition to this picturesque site "Valparaiso Aquarium" although small still gives a good idea of the fish and shellfish of Valparaiso and Chilean ocean habitat. Very affordable entrance fee and each small group with their own Aquarium tourguide ( with heavy Venezuelan accent , obvious reflection of the changes of times and how diverse Chile has become regarding it's ethnicity)

It was ok. We ended a Viking cruise there and the ship spent one overnight at the port. The pier for cruise ships is far and requires a shuttle bus. A Princess cruise was embarking that day and the process was crowded and somewhat disorganized. There was a huge crowd at the one food operation, apparently of passengers waiting to board the Princess ship. Getting off was fine and plenty of room to collect luggage and find taxi.

If you are looking the best place to see the local boats, here it is! A sailor and local place! I would definitely recommend this place. You can ask for tours also and check for restaurants.

Fairly humble city beach. Good place to bring a dog or read a book but nothing really worth going out of your way to visit. Not particularly photogenic.

This is a very quiet place, I like it since its waves are really tiny and is good for sea swimming. If you come here, remember to bring your food and everything you need to spend a day on the beach because shops are far from here. There are people selling local souvenirs and one restaurant, there are usually people selling food and other things bur in a beach price.

Go for the view, stay for the food and especially the great drinks. A pisco sour on the terrace with this panorama in front of you is priceless, and yet the prices are very reasonable, especially considering how touristy (and famous) the place is. Treat yourself, come for an aperitif or early dinner at sunset and you will not be disappointed. Sometimes it is fun to find "hidden gems", but in this case it is well worth it to go with the flow and enjoy a spectacular location, great service, excellent terrace with a view and good food, well deserving its fame. Definitely recommended!

We came in without a reservation and we were thrilled to be able to get a table. The food was amazing: Ceviche Pescado de dia Cazoleta de Camaron Only downside was that service was extremely slow. We understand that meals in chile are already at a slower pace but we’ve been here a month now and our dinner took 2.5 hours when plenty of other tables were out in 1. Would definitely recommend but maybe on a weeknight.

Local friends did recommend it as a top restaurant in the Valparaiso area. We enjoyed one appetizer; one ceviche was excellent but found the other tuna tartar salty. Mains were both different "pasteles", one jaiba and other mix salmon, and shrimp quite nice. Menu is changing as we were told. Reserve if you would like a table at the terrace/balcony. The service was excellent, prices are on the high side.

I was the only 1 to order an appetizer, which was weirdly brought out when mains were brought out to other people in my party, timing was a bit off, so everyone had to wait & watch me eat my main although they were done eating. My friends' lamb shank was a bit overcooked & tuna tartar tastes like shoyu tuna (often used for poke bowls), and the crab dish I had was ok.

The food, drinks and venue were all really nice but the service was inexcusably bad. One of the staff told me this was because they were short staffed due to it being a Sunday, which is a very easy problem to fix. When we were eventually able to get a hold of the waiter when he told us that lots of items on the menu were unavailable. We then ordered something that he didn't say was unavailable, only to be told a few minutes later that it also wasn't available. We ended up ordering 3 starters to share because they seemed to be the only things we could order. Only 2 of the starters came out, and the third (which was to be cooked in the clay oven we could see from our table on the terrace) never entered said oven, so we cancelled it. The bill then had a mistake where the item we initially ordered but were told was unavailable was on our bill. Only one of our 2 pisco sours arrived at first, 15 minutes after ordering, the second after another 15. Our water never arrived. We wanted to order more drinks or food because it was all delicious, but the service was so slow and bad / forgetful, so we thought otherwise. I would recommend going if you can somehow check in advance that they're going to have enough staff working. Definitely avoid on Sundays.

This restaurant has a cool vibe and great music. We went on Christmas Eve and they were very flexible when it comes to vegan options and said they could make every vegetarian dish on the menu vegan by using vegan cheese. I had the stuffed zucchini which was great and I loved the vegan parmesan on top that tasted like real parmesan.

The food here was so sad and tasteless. Meat was dry. Flavor profiles were not good, and the drinks were over-sweetened. It just tasted like there was no care in the food. I really love this place and have visited three times in three years - I particularly liked this years commemoration of the evacuation of Dunkirk in the Second World War .... this was to show the participation of one of the “little ships” which too part in the evacuation and a few years afterwards became the bote salvavidas in Valparaíso- this museum is first class and graphically shows the development of naval warfare in Chile and has some amazing artefacts and exhibits including some from the Pacific war and battle of Iquique which saw the sacrifice of Capitan de Fregata Arturo Prat and his crew aboard CNS Esmeralda - I thoroughly recommend a visit

Very beautiful art gallery, prices are fair. I think it's a about 4000 Pesos for foreigners and less than 1000 for locals. The oil paintings where astonishing and varied in size. I marveled for over one hour in incredulity. There's also many explanations in Spanish. The gallery features some European artists as well as many Chilean ones. The bathroom could be cleaner and the locks on the doors repaired. I had to hold the door shut while doing my business. Also the tours with a large group of people were a little annoying as you could sometimes not enter a room because it was thus crowded. I therefore suggest minimizing the size of the group. However, definitely worth a visit if you're in Valparaíso.

Beautiful old mansion overlooking the city that has been turned into a fine art museum. The art is has works from local and European artists, mostly French. Its quite a nice collection and is worth a visit. There are also two temporary exhibits free of charge that you can take a look. When I was there, the exhibits were photos of Chile and of tattoos.

One of my favorites places in Valparaíso. The best spot ever! I'm a fan of the museum 😁🎨

Was delighted at being able to get into this gallery and nearly had the place to myself. Very happy in seeing some Thomas Summer scales paintings as they are very bright and complement those in Chile's national gallery.. Nice cafe as well and the view over the harbour is lovely.

The building itself is worth seeing, let alone all the artwork inside.

Well... my expectations were low, yes extra low and there I was surprised! Nicely done, perfectly achieved to transfer you to the past in this perfectly conserved 20th century little palace. Inside you will find amazing collections of european artists as well as locals. On the way to this museum, you will have the opportunity to enjoy street art on the walls of houses on the hills stairs and yeah, you can do your daily steps without even notice 😎

Another place to visit when in Valparaiso. It's amongst the numerous architectural marvels of the area. Once you disembark from the metro, it's only minutes away on foot. The sites that one encounters along the route makes the walk seem like effortless. Eye candy for everyone to see and take in. Not a palace as I envisioned, however, the same and the history tied to the name make it worth a look

Permanent and travelling exhibits in one of the most interesting buildings in cerro Alegre. Both the building and its surroundings are a must if you visit the colorful Cerro Alegre. On some days you can also catch artisans outside showing and selling their art. Beware of local guides who will tell you that artisans here are only exhibiting their work and not selling, this is not true and damaging to Valparaíso's living world heritage.

Enticing aromas drew us into this corner restaurant. In this very touristy area, there are restaurants with better views, but if you don't care about that, Almacén Nacional is a nice choice. Quiet enough to talk to your tablemates, but still with a nice vibe, we could faintly hear street musicians and then later in the evening, an amazing accordion player came in and I felt like I was transported back in time. The wait staff were extremely nice and one spoke quite a bit of English. There were three in our group, and we shared a special tabla that wasn't on the regular menu, three types of meat (two beef and one chicken) all really delicious. The pisco sours were very good. We also had dessert, but I would say they were small and lackluster.

SEA LIONS!!! Go early afternoon when the fisherman are cleaning their catches and they will go nuts. The $1.50 ceviche by the beach is to die for. Tons of gulls and also a very pretty beach. The piers are nice. Maybe 100 commercial fishing boats used from here, and we found it very interesting to watch the fisherman launch and retrieve them using the crane at the end of the pier. The restaurants are good, parking is easy, and it's like 5 minutes from valparaiiso. We went twice.

Amazing place along the coast to enjoy some of the specialties of Valparaiso. Walk along the beach to see massive sea lions circling the port waiting for food from the fishermen who dump out carcasses along the pier. I've included a video of the feeding frenzy that followed if you're curious. The fish market also has a lot of beautiful and fresh seafood although it has the standard fish market smell.

If you go to Valparaiso, if you like you can stop by Caleta Potales to see some sea lions 🦭 . They look pretty big as compared to those that I have seen at other places. This place is close to a fish market but just a note that the fish market closes certain day of the week. I would recommend to go to the fish market and see these awesome creatures.

Arrived near evening, it was a good sunny day and not on high tide. Saw the sea lions chilling and sunbathing at the beach, enjoyed the sealion watching! I thought i had to pay to enter the port, and only saw the the sealions were further right nearer to the fishing boats. Head there for up close viewing, i didnt hve to pay. The market could have been closed already by then, i dont think the fishy smell will bother you if you enjoyed sealion watching.😅

We went to Coleta Portales in the morning to see the fisherman bring in and clean their catch. The sea lions and seagulls were the lucky recipients of all the scraps. It was a feeding frenzy! A great place to just soak in all the maritime activity and culture.

Great collection of street art along the stairs and on the street in the hills of Valparaiso. It was pretty hot and we didn't see a lot of tourists around, so we couldn't always tell if we were in the right place, but the art itself was excellent. Impressive buildings which reminds me when I went to La Habana. Very classic. This part of town will take you back to the city origins, when Valparaíso was nothing but a port, a church, a square and some stores. I mean there's not much to do here, honestly there's a couples of cafes, some stores and that's it however the place is full of history, you can see in the locals eyes, in the way they live, etc. There are ruins of old buildings that once were full of life. Abandoned brothels, markets really get you in sync with that forgotten Valparaíso. So, yes this area is poetic and nostalgic for the porteños, always reminding them those good old times when Valpo was the pearl of the Pacific. One piece of advice for tourists: when visting these type of places always carry your belongings close to you. Travel light at al times since these places are well known for muggings and thefts. You'll be fine as long as you don't draw too much attention. I've been there a lot of time and the best thing to do is just feel the place and act normal, a couple of pics here and there and keep going. It's a pity to end a review like this but that the way it is.

Our favourite restaurant in Valparaíso. We ended up eating here 3 times and they were all great. The pasta is excellent with experimental sauces that were inventive and delicious. They have a great selection of wine to boot. It’s better to make a reservation but you might be lucky and get one the few bar seats if you do decide to walk in.

Great service with a great wine list to accompany delicious house made pasta. Only missing a Star due to the red wine gnocchi I ordered being overly sweet even though the roasted shredded meat was really good. The fettuccini with Frutti di Mar that my partner ordered was exceptionally delicious though and I would go back just for that dish. Desserts are a bit overly sweet but still good. Will go again to try different menu items!

My wife and I enjoyed great pasta, wine and pisco sours at this restaurant. The restaurant is cute and staff is professional and attentive. I had the salmon gnocchi which was top notch while my wife had a shrimp gnocchi. Both were good but definitely on the richer side. We were slightly disappointed by our chocolate brownie dessert which was little over the top. Overall a solid option if looking for Italian while dining in Valparaíso.

We are staying at Pasta e Vino Hostel in Valparisio so we tried out the restaurant downstairs. The prices are on the higher end as many other reviewers have stated but the food is quite delicious here. Do try it out if you like good quality well prepared food. The Abalone Raviolis (which is not as readily available where we live) was outstanding. The Chiramaya Panna Cotta was refreshing. Diego (also a somolier) was in point with his wine recommendations. He was super helpful in recommendations for food at the restaurant as well as other wines to look for while in Chile to bring back home. Overall the staff was very friendly and helpful.

The best Italian resturant we’ve been, better than New York or Italy. Highly recommend. Must try the eggplant gnocchi !!!
