HAMMOND, La. - South Alabama rolls in dominant fashion, firing on all cylinders for the eye-popping 13-1, seven-inning win over Southeastern Louisiana.
The Jaguars wasted no time, with the first six batters finding first base. A
Lucas Ismaili double scored the first two, a fielders' choice scratched another, and
Joseph Sullivan tapped a single into the outfield in his return to the diamond.
South was quiet in the second inning, but picked back up again in the third.
Micah Morgan launched a leadoff homer past right field, then
JG Bell and Sullivan reached behind him. Two sac hits in a row scored Bell, and after
Nathan Wood drew a walk,
Will Turner sent both home on a double into right center.
Morgan's next at bat in the fourth held the same result, making this his second two-home run game of the season. A
Tyler Borges RBI scored the 10th run of the game before the end of the inning.
Turner scored another RBI in the fifth, followed by a sac fly by Ismaili. The first four innings were held down on the mound by starter
Zach Stevens , who earned his first collegiate win of his career, throwing 4.0 innings with no hits allowed and two strikeouts.
Cooper Cooksey entered in relief but struggled with command, issuing two walks and hitting one batter; he allowed the Lions' lone run of the game off a wild pitch strikeout.
Cade Carlson came in for the sixth, but was unable to continue the five innings of no-hit ball. The leadoff batter lined a double down the right field line. Carlson then worked out of bases loaded to end the inning with one strikeout. In the top of the inning the Jags scored the final run, with Wood sending Bell home on a single to right.
Jacob Haley took to the rubber in the seventh and final inning, allowing one hit, and striking out two.
Winning Pitcher: Zach Stevens (1-0)
Losing Pitcher: Will Kinzeler (1-5)

On
Zach Stevens' start and continued success: Yeah, I expected him to get better. I'd seen enough of him out of high school before he got hurt, and early in the fall. The biggest thing with him, his changeup starting to come. A few too many walks, but command is the last one to come off Tommy John. Velo was pretty good, they didn't have a gun up there. He looked (like he) probably touched twos and threes, but he held up pretty well. I think he threw 72 pitches, so that was good; four walks, again, I'd like to see that cut in half, but no hits. So, you know, I thought he moved his fastball round threw enough sliders in there to get them off balance, dumped a couple curveballs in there, and I thought his changeup was very effective against the lefties.
On having a big game offensively going into a big series: It was good. Good to get Sully back; his first game in almost a month and some guys that we need swung the bat really well I think. Looking up and down the lineup, when you have seven or eight guys drive in runs usually that means you get on a lot and yeah, aside from the second and third, in the second inning with nobody out and the two punch outs, where we didn't score in the second. I was very pleased with us offensively.
