Aiden Markram set the World Cup stage on fire at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday as he broke the record for the fastest World Cup century in the history of the tournament. Markram tore into the Sri Lankan bowling attack, getting to his three-figure score in just 49 deliveries as South Africa flaunted their batting firepower in their opening match of the Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign.

Aiden Markram was the third South Africa batter after Rassie van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock to hit hundreds in the innings after Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl in New Delhi. Markram, however, stole the limelight as she showed no mercy to the Sri Lankan bowlers in the capital city in the 4th match of the World Cup.

SA vs SL, World Cup 2023 Updates

Markram broke the record held by Kevin O'Brien's 50-ball century against England in 2011 in Bengaluru. Markram also broke AB de Villiers's record of the fastest World Cup hundred by a South African batter.

Markram hit 14 boundaries and 3 sixes as he finished with 106 in 54 balls, getting out only inthe 48th over. Notably, Markram had walked into bat only in the 31st over after a 204-run partnership with De Kock and Van Der Dussen.

De Kock hit 100 off 84 balls, hitting 12 fours and 3 sixes to start his final World Cup campaign on a high. Rassie van der Dussen hit 108 from 110 balls, hitting 13 centuries and 2 sixes.

This was also the first time in a World Cup match where 3 batters from a team scored hundreds in an innings. It is only the 4th instance in ODI cricket.

South Africa went past 400 in their World Cup opener and it was the third time they have done so in a World Cup match. South Africa have scored in excess of 400 in ODIs for the 8th time.
