Basically a modern variation on the classic Mark Twain story "The Prince and the Pauper," Barbie: The Princess and the Popstar is a music-filled story about two high-profile girls, one a princess and one a pop singer, who appreciate their own fortunate circumstances, but sometimes long for simpler lives. Tori loves being a princess, but sometimes she wishes for fewer responsibilities and more time for fun--something she thinks her idol, pop star Keira, must have plenty of. While Keira is living her dream as a performer, she's frustrated with all the time-consuming logistics her job entails. She wishes she just had some leisure time to write songs and relax--and leisure is something she assumes a princess's life is full of. Tori and Keira meet and discover that, with a little help from a couple of magical accessories, they can switch places for a day. The girls find out that life is complicated whether you're a princess or a pop star, but when they are prevented from switching back to their own lives before a big concert, things get really messy. Add in Keira's manager, whose main concern is promoting his own career, and a dire threat to a hidden secret that's vital to the entire kingdom, and the stakes suddenly become very high. This production is full of catchy pop music that includes a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." The program paints a glitzy picture of life in the spotlight that girls ages 3 to 8 will love--never mind that parents will swear they've heard this story before. --Tami Horiuchi

In this movie The Princess and The Popstar switch places and discover how much they really love their lives. It is the classic story, "The Princess and The Pauper" but redone for today's day and age. Of course there are some parts that are simply ridiculous and slightly hilarious, but this movie is a lot of fun. I like it much more than the Barbie version of "The Princess and The Pauper". There is a song that is used, with some slight changes is verse, in both movies - I could never understand this and neither does my little. She likes the Popstar version much better.
I highly recommend this movie for your little girls. I think that there is slightly less focus on fashion and toy-selling than many of the other Barbie movies. I have also found that the lead characters are more developed in this movie than in other Barbie movies.
Our daughter had a very bad reaction to pollen and fought through itchy eyes while we waited for the symptoms to slowly clear after a bath.
This show helped to calm her down and she was fully engaged even though I really don't put these shows on for her. We let her choose this time because she wasn't feeling well.
Thankfully, by the end, she was feeling so much better. The music wasn't terribly bad. I did find myself singing a few of the songs after the show had ended even though I was desperately trying to purge them from my brain.
We aren't Barbie people, but it served its purpose. ;-)

My daughters (age 7 & 2) love watching Barbie movies & singing along to the songs. They can watch these over and over again & never get bored. They have virtually the entire Barbie dvd collection now; brilliant for a rainy/cold day, or when they need to sit and be calm (so I can get on with housework etc. ... naughty mummy using tv to "watch" the kids :) !!)
The stories always have a respectful tone, & well-mannered underlying moral / teachings so that's an added bonus - I buy dvds to entertain my kids ... not teach them, so when they do I see it as a responsibly made product (it's my job to raise my girls the right way after all). All in all - always an excellent purchase!
