Firmin Didot created his Didot fonts while living in Paris in 1783. These fonts capture all the best features of modern (or Didone) roman type styles with massive stems flowing to fine hairlines and straight serifs without bracketing – characteristics often associated with contemporary romans such as metal type. Due to these delicate hairlines however, use was typically limited by metal type alone.
Adrian Frutiger created Linotype Didot specifically for digital technology in 1992, featuring features that make Didot suitable for bookwork as well as text applications such as web pages. Like Bodoni, its fine lines have also been modified for display applications.
