A 69-year-old man was charged with aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing another member of an LA Fitness gym in north Austin on Friday.

John David Makinson was arrested after the incident at the gym located at 2020 West Anderson Lane. According to an arrest affidavit, Makinson stabbed the victim in the left buttock with a 4 to 6-inch folding knife around 11:05 a.m.

Police said Makinson and the victim apparently had a dispute over a leg press machine. After the stabbing, Makinson chased the victim through the locker room while still holding the knife, the affidavit said.

The victim suffered a severe laceration nearly 4 inches long that required medical treatment, including staples and a blood transfusion, police reported.

Witnesses described Makinson yelling threats at others after the stabbing. He was detained by police nearby a short time later.

Makinson was previously convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2021, police said. He faces a new second-degree felony charge in the latest incident.
