I graduated from AOS many years ago, and to this day, it is very hard to find good things to say about it. I did very well in school, though I tried and failed to receive a good challenge; therefore, I was very bored in all of my classes and got so little out of them. Every teacher that I had acted like they hated their jobs, as well as the kids that they were teaching, OFTEN taunting kids. There is no addressing of bullying. I was picked very frequently as someone who did not come from a rich WestU family, among other things (race, sexual orientation, and body). The counseling sessions promised to be confidential end up as an email right in the parent's inbox. For the amount that tuition costs, the school is way below the level it should be. Finally, I would like to point out that there are no high ratings given to this school by students and alumni, only parents. Their experiences are wonderful because the school is catered to them. If your kid can get in here, they can go elsewhere.
AOS used to be such an incredible school, there wasn't a day of school that I wanted to miss. The school pride was incredible, the greek culture was a great added bonus, the Olympics were incredible, they were the pride and joy of this school. In Lower school they made sure that you had the foundation to succeed in the next grade. English and Writing were perhaps the best classes, there wasn't an English class through 1st-4th that was lacking. Math and Science were different, I've always struggled with math and science so I always needed extra help and there were times when I felt left behind. It became more apparent when I went to middle school and I realized that no-one was going to hold my hand. The language department is truly lacking, when I moved to Spanish 2 in high school, I was incredibly unprepared even though I'd taken 3 years of Spanish prior. Math was worse, I had to retake algebra in high school because I wasnt prepared for it. I have more, but I exceeded the word limit.
We have been thoroughly impressed by AOS leadership, faculty and staff, as well as the academic and extracurricular offerings, but what had made us truly love the school is it’s open, diverse and caring community, and it’s commitment to nurturing both students’ hearts and minds. They truly follow through on their mission, and community members follow suit. We love AOS!
Our two daughters have spent the last 13 years at AOS, one going K-8 and the other Preschool-8. AOS is a wonderful place to go to school not only because of the strong academics but also for the amazing community and culture which is unmatched in Houston. AOS is a warm and welcoming community that supports children as they learn and grow as independent thinkers and doers. AOS faculty and administration are accessible and flexible focusing on developing children's "hearts and minds" which is more than just a slogan at AOS--this idea is ingrained deeply in every aspect of the school from academics to athletics and everything in between. I encourage anyone interested in AOS to go and tour the school. The tour was what sold us on AOS and allows you to interact with current parents and students. I cannot overstate how important AOS has been to my children's development as hard-working, kind, and caring teenagers.
This school is a genuinely magical place - for both kids and parents! It is a warm and loving environment, the academics are excellent, there are abundant extracurricular opportunities, and parent engagement is always welcome. The kids have abundant opportunities in science, music, art, and sports - in addition to of course having rigorous math, reading, and writing curriculums. The school has many unique traditions that really enrich the sense of community - from homecooked Spaghetti Dinner night to AOS Olympics to Lap Day. Love seeing my kids grow academically, socially, and emotionally each day.
AOS is a gem -- I so appreciate the school's focus on the child's heart and mind. I love who my children have become as a result of this wonderful community!
We love AOS! The community is so warm and inclusive. Both of our kids have grown leaps and bounds academically as well as socially/emotionally since we started. As second year parents, we couldn’t be happier with our choice for a school home!
We have loved our time at AOS. It is truly a wonderful place with kind and loving faculty, staff and teachers. The lessons and academics are outstanding and our children are happy and eager to get to school each morning. The community is extremely welcoming. We are very happy with our experience at AOS and feel confident our children are being provided with a well rounded education.
Don’t go to school here if you want a solid math program that will prepare your kids for high school math. The Administration has botched the math program for the last few years.
Almunus here. I spent nine years at AOS and graduated in 2013. If you want your child to be thrown into one of the most toxic schooling environments alongside spoiled and incredibly rude classmates, AOS is the school for you. If you want your child to be appreciated for who they are and not isolated for not being a child of a rich, staunchly conservative set of parents, then look elsewhere—horrible, horrible experience. Religion is shoved so far down your throat you'll come to resent it the second you graduate. Emotional support is non-existent.
I can’t say enough good things about AOS! We have a PreK student at the school and she has just flourished here. The environment is so warm and welcoming to both the parents and the kids. The community cannot be beat. Love AOS.
There are very clear favorites from rule enforcers that don’t get punished even though they break many more rules than people who aren’t favorited. I never felt challenged at school because I feel that they only teach skills and information that you will never need in life. I have spoken to many of my classmates about this issue and close to all of them agree. Parents tend to be drawn to this school because it makes it very easy for them and that their children love going to school because it is such a great environment. Children tend to not say their true feelings, especially to faculty, when asked about AOS because if they do opportunities and respect will be taken away. Over the years I have spoken to many of my classmates and a lot of them truly hated their experience and felt trapped. It is also very hard to make friends when you enter in a later grade because many people have been at AOS their whole lives and no body wants to open up their friend groups to new people.
I have hated my experience at this school. I am not trying to encourage people to not go to the school I just want to share my experience there
Great school! AOS is a great school to prep you for high school! The academic challenge and addition of clubs, sports, homework make you ready for the rigor of high school. Truly a great school.
I have been going to AOS since Kindergarten and I will be graduating this year. I have grown up at this school and I feel prepared for high school. The academics are amazing and most of the teachers are involved with the students and teach in a fun learning environment. Once you reach 6th grade, sports are required unless you are on a team outside of school. The teams are fun and are like a second family. Bullying is rare and when it is present, the staff crack down on it. The lunch is okay but sometimes it can come out undercooked. The theatre and music department is one of the best parts of the school in my opinion. The theatre and music teachers are experienced and prepare us well for musicals, plays, and concerts. Overall, this school would be a great choice for anyone looking for a challenging but yet fun school.
AOS offers a warm, loving environment alongside competitive academics and a stimulating learning trajectory. Students seems very happy and outgoing as well as confident in their ability to handle challenges. AOS has created a path for my son to grow to love learning and gain so much even at a young age.
AOS is a wonderful school. My son is in Pre-K and he loves going to school every day. The school is a nurturing environment that also provides a diverse and challenging curriculum. In addition to academics, the school also focuses on developing the students moral character and sense of community. It is a school that places community service as one of its priorities. AOS is a great community with extensive parent involvement. The new addition to the building is beautiful. The space is open and full of light. You really see all the hard work and dedication that was put in not just by the school, but also by the parents in order to make it all possible. We have just started our AOS journey and we are looking forward to the many years ahead that we have to be a part of this community.
AOS is an amazing place! Warm teachers, administrators, and parent community. Challenging academics and faculty that are interested in capturing the hearts of young children to create a love of learning from early childhood. My young children (age 3.5 and 5) are exposed to a variety of Fine Arts, Athletics, Language, and other enrichment activities and we could not be more excited to see them grow into the mature, intelligent, and kind middle school children they have as role models at AOS!
