Seeing himself as disabled. Some disabilities aren't as obvious as others. Social disabilites (like shyness) can stop you getting the most out of life just as much as physical disabilities.
This could be compared with November Spawned a Monster. Except here the invalid person has a more active role - where Morrissey distances himself from the invalid in NSaM and shows us one view, here the invalid confronts Morrissey... heavy irony.
He relates to his paraplegic (or similar condition) friend, they both have a disability. M thinks that his social disorder is keeping him from life the same way his friend's disability is keeping him from his.
M realizes that it's all his decision, he could make an effort to talk to people, meet people, but he thinks he can't. He's jealous of his friend who was born that way.
I read this one differently. He (you know who) refers to his invalid friend's phone call, "If I had your limbs I would steal away". I believe this means that his friend says "take a break", which he does.
To the Sands hotel, where he calls his invalid friend to report of the slime and the grime gelling, complaints of sleeping on the floor, etc.
In other words, a promoted escape (to the Sands, of all places!) that turned out bad.
"In our different ways we are the same".
That's what's great about interpretation - who cares? Heh!
