How do i transfer power from a vertical axle?
« on: December 02, 2008, 04:27:30 pm »

Been playing DF for a month now, never liked roguelike ASCII art games, but this one hooked me, its addicting as hell :o . Even though it has a steep learning curve (almost as steep as toribash), its one hell of a fun when you get the hang of it, and the wiki is a lifesaver.

So i started a engineering endeavor last week, basically raising water for a brook for about 10 z levels to do alot of cool stuff (IE waterfalls, a closer water source, obsidian factory, etc). Everything is working fine really, waterwheels are keeping everything moving, all pumps are in place, though i have a critical question: How the hell do i transmit power FROM a vertical axle.

I got all axles moving and stuff, the thing is, the vertical axle is right beside the pump and no power is being transmitted. I tried building a gear assembly next to both, but that didn't work either, i can't figure out how to draw power from a vertical axle (the v axle is active, btw.).

I prositioned everything like this.

     %o
     %x
To no effect. (legend: %% = pump, o = active vertical axle, x = gear assembly).

With vertical axles, you need to position the gear assembly either directly below or directly above the axle.  Gear assemblies next to vertical axles don't work, as you've discovered.  :)

Oooo i see, thank ye for the answer  ;D

I'm a bit confused though, can gear assembly transfer power through z levels  :( ? Because to pull water through 10 z levelsi built 10 levels of stacked pumps just like i was showing in the original post, and got a 10 level axle next to them, and that, as you can see, didn't work.

So basically, i'll have to substitute every axle part except for the one in the very base (which is where the waterwheels are) for a gear assembly, but will it keep transferring the power upward to the other gear assemblies in the upper levels?

Pumps will transfer power to each other, you don't need the vertical axle.  Look at pic #2

Just have a channeled tile at the front of each pump and they will transfer power themselves.  it is important that the channeled tile is at the front(output) end of the pump not the back(input) end.

To answer the other question, all machine components also transmit power.  Gears, pumps, and mills will transmit in all orthogonal directions.  Water wheels will transmit to the sides of the center, windmills will transmit below the middle square, and axles will transmit on each end.

The only advantage you get from horizontal or vertical axles over using only gears, for example, is the reduced power cost.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

The vertical axle needs to start and end with gear assemblies. For transferring between 2 z-levels, the vertical axle should consist of only gear assemblies. Only when transferring power through 3 or more z-levels do you need vertical axle parts.

Yes, gear assemblies transfer power up and down (if there is no floor in the way) as well as around.
