A new trailer from Animal Planet is no ordinary cat's tale.

A young Melanie Griffith and her mother, actress Tippi Hedren, figure prominently into the story about the making of Roar, which some describe as the most dangerous movie from Hollywood.

In the trailer, images of a bloody-faced young Melanie are shown as they appear on the Animal Planet documentary ROAR: The Most Dangerous Movie Ever Made which premieres Saturday (10 ET/PT).

In development and production for 10 years, the movie resulted in injuries to more than 70 members of its cast and crew. First released in 1981, the feature-length drama focuses on wildlife researcher Hank (The Exorcist producer Noel Marshall), who lives with more than 100 wild animals, including cheetahs, elephants, lions and tigers on a preserve in the African plains. When his wife, Madelaine (played by Hedren, who's Marshall's wife), and children  pay a visit, the family members find themselves in the middle of a huge cat fight as wild animals battle for dominance.

In the Animal Planet documentary, sons John and Jerry Marshall and crew members discuss the period leading up to and during production. It also explains how Noel Marshall and Hedren poured nearly everything they had financially into the project, which was filmed at what's now Shambala Preserve, north of Los Angeles.

But it wasn't just their bank accounts that were hurting. "Everybody in the family had been injured by the cats, and that included Melanie, who was clawed across the face by a young lion and needed plastic surgery," John Marshall says in the documentary.

Eventually, the film that drew blood, sweat and tears finally completed production. And now, Hedren is head of The Roar Foundation, which runs Shambala. Its mission is to raise awareness of the dangers of private ownership of exotic animals.
