The 1949 Midsummer Classic marked the first appearance of black players during an All-Star contest.

Did you know that this was also the first All-Star Game which used six umpires? How about that it was the first Midsummer Classic to exceed three hours playing time?

Joe DiMaggio had not played during the 1949 season until the 28th of June due to a heel injury and was not selected by the fans as an All-Star. Manager Lou Boudreau chose him as a reserve and played him in centerfield when Tommy Henrich injured his knee prior to the contest - a wise move as Joltin' Joe drove in three runs, hit a single and a double.
