AMD vs Intel for laptops. Which one is generally better?

Hardware

It’s been years since I bought a laptop. And back then, Intel was just better in every way when it came to laptop performance. Cooler temps, way better performance, better battery life. Now I realize things have changed. I don’t want to include any with dedicated graphics as those are out of my budget. But generally, which one is better? Are are they pretty close?

The last few years, AMD was superior in essentially every measurable way. More cores, more threads, cooler running, better efficiency, and better iGP. While Intel regained the performance crown with 12th gen Alder Lake in the H series CPU's, U series continued to be dominated by AMD. With the 1st gen Core Ultra Meteor Lake and 8000 series Hawk Point things are MUCH more equal, although in U series AMD continues to have SIGNIFICANT advantage in iGP (due to intel limiting the U series to Arc Xe 4 instead of Arc Xe 8 that most of the H series has).
