Google previously introduced the ability to offer AI summaries and additional features with Search Labs. Now, things are about to get even better. Let's take a quick look at all the new capabilities Google Search is receiving, powered by Gemini AI.

New Gemini AI features to Google Search

Google Search is introducing several new features empowered by generative AI to enhance the user experience and provide more comprehensive results:

AI Overviews: Soon, Google Search will allow users to get quick answers with AI Overviews. This new tool will provide users with summarised information on a topic along with links for further exploration. According to Google, this feature has been tested extensively in Search Labs and is now rolling out to users in the U.S. with plans for expansion to more countries. Users will also have the option to adjust the language complexity or detail level of the AI Overview.

Multi-Step Reasoning: Further leveraging the capabilities of a custom Gemini model, Search is now gaining the ability to handle increasingly complex questions in one go. Users can ask nuanced questions with all their caveats and requirements, and Search will provide comprehensive answers.

Planning Assistance: Search will now also offer users planning capabilities directly within the platform, starting with meal and vacation planning. Users will be able to search for tasks like creating a meal plan for a group, and Search will provide starting points with a range of options from across the web. Users can also make adjustments and customise their plans, with the ability to export them to Docs or Gmail.

AI-Organized Results Page: Google Search will also use generative AI to create AI-organized results pages, making it easier for users to explore fresh ideas. These results will be categorised under unique headlines, featuring various perspectives and content types. This feature will initially focus on categories like dining, recipes, movies, music, books, hotels, shopping, and more.

Video Understanding: Search is also expanding its capabilities to include video understanding, allowing users to ask questions through video. This feature will enable users to troubleshoot issues or gain information about objects in motion by simply using a video as input. Initially available for Search Labs users in English in the U.S., this feature will be expanded to more regions over time.

According to Google, the recent updates to Google Search are in line with reimagining and enhancing the search experience by combining advanced AI capabilities with its existing infrastructure.
