AMERICAN SHORT STORY, THE: THE DISPLACED PERSON (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramatized American short stories. In this adaptation of Flannery O'Connor's short story "The Displaced Person," Mr. Guizac, a Polish immigrant, arrives in the U.S. after World War II to work as a laborer on a Southern farm. Mrs. McIntyre, the widow who owns the farm, is thrilled at first with the industrious and skillful employee whom Father Flynn has brought. Mrs. McIntyre -- who is more concerned with the money Guizac will save her than with Guizac's need for shelter -- decides that she no longer needs the shiftless Mr. Shortley, her other farm worker, and she dismisses his family from her land. Complications arise when she learns that Guizac has arranged for his Polish cousin to marry Sulk, a black laborer who has paid for the Polish woman's passage. Mrs. McIntyre forbids the interracial marriage, rehires Shortley, and wants to fire Guizac, but Father Flynn asks her to reconsider. Shortley, however, attempts to rid the farm of the foreigner.
