DC Studios has been in a bit of trouble as they have attempted to rescue the sinking ship of the superhero slates getting released. With James Gunn taking over as the co-CEO of the superhero brand with Peter Safran, Warner Brothers is expecting a ray of sunshine. But with the failed DC movies, the fate of several movies has been hazy, including Asher Angel’s Shazam 2.
Gunn’s tenure in DC has started, but the beginning of his new version of DC Universe is yet to roll out, which will officially begin with his upcoming movie Superman. Failure of the recent DC flops was a huge question mark on several heroes’ return— Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, Ezra Miller’s The Flash, and Zachary Levi’s Shazam 2. But with Gunn’s takeover, the potential comeback has been slim to none.
Asher Angel Was Heartbroken After Shazam 3 Uncertainty
The 2019 DC superhero action comedy, Shazam! was a surprising hit starring Zachary Levi and Asher Angel as Billy Batson, aka Shazam. The movie made room for more sequels, and with that note, David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods— the second installment to the franchise— was released. But uncertainly loomed on the third potential movie, and Angel was heartbroken with it.
“Yeah, I think we always planned on making a third one, but you have new people come in and take over and plans can change and things can shift. I guess we’ll see. We’ll see what the future holds,” Angel recently told ComicBookMovie.com
Shazam! Fury of the Gods failed to make an impression both at the box office and among critics, grossing only $132 million worldwide against a production budget of $125 million (per The Numbers). So, by default, the odds of the actors reprising the roles in another movie are foggy but Angel, in particular keeps an open space for any other role in DC.
Asher Angel Is Open To Join James Gunn’s DC Universe
In the chat with ComicBookMovie.Com, the actor also revealed that he is quite open to returning to his Shazam! role or if not that, he will play any other character in James Gunn’s DC Universe.
“I’d always be open to going back and playing Billy Batson. I’d never want to take Zach’s place because we’re in this together. If there any other characters out there in the future, I’d also be open to that. I’m pretty open! There’s a time and there’s place, and it’ll happen,” Angel said.
But superhero movies have been facing inhabitable trauma in the form of a new phenomenon called ‘Superhero Fatigue’ but Angel is far from believing it. “Look, I think the superhero genre is a really hard genre,” he said.
“I hate when people talk about superhero fatigue. I don’t believe in that stuff. I think whatever DC or Marvel puts out there, it’s gonna resonate, but if it resonates, it resonates. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I think a lot of the time, people put so much pressure on Marvel and DC in that every movie has to be amazing. It’s a hard genre, for sure, and I’m just happy I had the opportunity to be involved in that world. It was wish fulfilment because I always wanted to be a superhero when I was a kid.”
Angel’s comment is rather optimistic and his willingness to continue his affiliation with the genre revealed the faith of the actor in superhero movies. Also, Gunn’s preparation for the new dawn of DC seems very promising. Right now, the actor is busy on the promotional tour of his recent movie, Lazareth.
The Shazam! franchise is available to stream on Max.
