This school classifies as a liberal arts high school, but I would say that its curriculum is focused on math and science. I feel very prepared for college, because the coursework is extremely heavy.
The academics and college readiness are very good. However, the administration running the school is extremely poor. The layers of bureaucracy end up making the school accomplish nothing for their students and only for themselves and academics. Their care for students' wellbeing is an absolute minimum and run the school like it's a company with the only measuring factor of their success being GPA and ranking. As a boarding student, I find the freedom to be a very big positive but also shows a side of the people who are supposed to be monitoring the students end up not doing their job. I give this school a 2.5/5
Almost 16 years later, I fondly recall living, learning, and maturing within Cranbrook's safe, hallowed boarding halls. There, I met instructors who, after retirement, have shared family meals with me; I met friends who were the best men at my wedding; and, perhaps most importantly, I met myself. I reckoned with the extent of my character, willpower, and intellectual interests. Everyone - students, teachers, administrators, and dinning staff and custodians - was a mentor, educated in academic disciplines and life's troubles and triumphs. Living with moody teenagers, they were Latin teachers, History teachers, English teachers - often willing to answer a random question and share a casual laugh. Dining hall meals were better than they ever were in college, and I now know I took that Saarinen designed architecture, artful campus, and smooth bus rides between campuses for granted. While I am a proud UPenn and Harvard graduate, I will always remember where it started. Aim High.
