FC Bayern have extended Joshua Kimmich’s contract by a further two years, keeping him at the club until 2025. We’ve picked out the best photos from his incredibly successful six years at Bayern so far to track his development.
The first of many
Kimmich joined Bayern in summer 2015 and the then 20-year-old immediately established himself under Pep Guardiola. It wasn’t long before he got his hands on his first silverware as he followed a Bundesliga title with the DFB Cup after a penalty shootout win over Borussia Dortmund. His trophy collection in the red of Bayern is now 16 strong and features six Bundesliga winner’s medals, four DFL Supercups, three DFB Cups, the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
Roar at Schalke
Kimmich the defender got his first Bayern goal on 9 September 2016, rounding off a 2-0 win away at Schalke – and he let out his joy with a great roar. And with that out of the way, he got his first FCB brace only four days later in the 5-0 victory over Rostov in the Champions League.
100% passion and commitment
Kimmich has shown his tremendous passion and commitment from the very start in a Bayern shirt. As well as his footballing ability, he’s an almost ever-present and relentless battler for the ball, as seen here in his first match as an FCB player back at former club RB Leipzig.
Establishment as a leader
Whether as a right-back, centre-back or holding midfielder, Kimmich has consistently developed into an undisputed starter and established himself as an irreplaceable leader in Bayern’s game. And he always steps up for the big occasion, even if it hasn’t always been enough for a win, as was the case in the 2017/18 Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid with a goal apiece in the first and second leg.
Coronation in Lisbon
A dream came true in August 2020 at the Champions League finals tournament in Lisbon when Kimmich and Bayern were crowned champions of Europe. It was the culmination of a treble but by no means the end of things. He would go on to win the German Supercup and UEFA Super Cup, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup, as FCB completed a historic sextuple.
A goal symbolic of its scorer
Kimmich embodies a desire to win and the Bayern mentality of always keeping going like few others. His winning goal in the 3-2 victory over Dortmund in the 2020 Supercup was symbolic of those values, as he acrobatically forced the ball past goalkeeper Roman Bürki while falling to the ground. Given his contract extension to 2025, Bayern fans can look forward to plenty more unforgettable Kimmich moments in the years to come.
