A new era at DC
In 2025, a new era will begin at DC! Last year, director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and producer Peter Safran were brought in to lead the group to relaunch their superheroes. Their goal: to create a cinematic universe similar to that of Marvel. Technically, this is already what the superhero giant has tried to do with Ben Affleck's Batman and Henry Cavill's Superman. Accompanied by The Flash (Ezra Miller), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and finally Cyborg (Ray Fisher), they were able to reunite in several films, notably in Justice League.
If this meeting, which could be compared to that of the Avengers, delighted many comic book fans, at the cinema, it ended in disappointment: the film only received a 41/100 on Metacritic, saved by a few points by the Snyder Cut. Since then, fans have experienced many disappointments, but Gunn represents new hope. Indeed, 2025 will mark a new beginning and a return for Superman who will open this new chapter with Legacy, the first images of which have just been revealed.
The first image of Legacy
Since Henry Cavill has left his role as Superman, all eyes are on James Gunn and especially the new interpreter of the hero: David Corenswet (Pearl, House of Cards). We still know very little about this new film titled Legacy, except that it should be released in July 2025 and that it marks the start of the first chapter of the new DCU, called “Gods Monsters”. According to the comics, which inspired the director, we should find the hero there in what could be his last moments, after having been poisoned by Lex Luthor.
Obviously, this deadly sentence calls everything into question for the Kryptonian, especially his notion of justice. “The film focuses on Superman as he seeks balance between his Kryptonian heritage and his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American model. He is goodness, in a world that has decided that said goodness is no longer fashionable,” James Gunn explained to Hollywood Reporter. Aside from these few clues from the filmmaker and Instagram posts to mark the start of filming, production had been very discreet until yesterday.
James Gunn surprisingly revealed a first image of Superman Legacy on X. It is the first appearance of David Corenswet in the character's new costume. We see him here putting it on; behind him, we can see a ball of purple energy or a laser. We can also see that he has already participated in battles given the state of his clothing and that he has a serious look (or nonchalant depending on interpretations). With this poster, the filmmaker begins to unveil his new project and reaffirms the release date: July 11, 2025. All that remains is to wait patiently for a trailer.
