First off does anyone agree that Mu Kun gives me Banana Fish vibes? But anyways there are 3 big mystery cases that were all complicated and engaging to solve. There is a lot of mind games involved in this book so if you don’t like complications or twists or just overall philosophy of the mind and of good and evil, this book is probably not for you. And of course let’s not forget the spicy interactions between the main characters- I could die.
Overall I think the reason why I really liked this book was how realistic the characters were and how detailed the story was. Like it never failed to surprise me every time. This was definitely a good find.

If you enjoy detective novels or mysteries and are looking for something a little different, give this a try! For me, I found getting to know the main characters and their pasts the most exciting part of the novel. What is the meaning behind Detective Xie Lanshan's nightmares and what led to his change in personality? What does forensic sketch artist, Shen Liufei, know about XL that he's keeping secret? Despite gruesome murders and heavy themes, the author manages to balance it out with a good dose of flirtatious interactions between XL and SL and humorous side characters which makes for a really fun ride.
If you're reading the corresponding manhua on Tapas, Body of Crime, the plot is roughly the same but with the violence toned down, and they do a good job of capturing the essence of the characters. The novel is definitely darker than the comic (they added more dog treats in the comic but I'm not complaining about that, lol). What I appreciate about the novel over the comic is that you get to understand the MC on a deeper level. Even if you are following the comic, the novel adds context and depth to the characters that make it worth reading still.
For full disclosure, I am a fan of danmeis in general and am excited so many danmeis are getting official translations this year. I hope more people enjoy reading it in the mainstream!
I can't comment on the accuracy of the translation because I can't read the Chinese to compare against, but it was a smooth reading experience. However, I did notice a few typos here and there that I hope the publishing company can fix or at least be more diligent about for the next novel. I think that the novel could have benefited from some footnotes/translator notes, especially for some of the Chinese literary references that are made. I removed 1 star for these reasons and because I didn't enjoy the last arc of this novel as much. That said, I'm looking forward to the the twists and turns that will reveal itself in the sequel!

I really like the characters who are even bigger mysteries than the crimes that they solve. I want more! I want volume 2.

I loved the sample and bought the book. I was not disappointed! I devoured the book. I like the solving of the crimes in this police detective story that is layered with stories within stories as the main character mystery grows. I am very invested in the main character and his object of flirting unabashed. I finished reading and quickly added the sample for volume 2 and am awaiting the ordered book as I leave this review.

This was the first published danmei in English version before MXTX novels, and its incredibly underrated. More should give it a chance and support Peach Flower House. There are a couple of good reviews from other countries and i'm happy about that. Also glad that Amazon India made it available here to be purchased since sometimes its hard to access international websites/retailers without visa card. Little Mushroom book one:judgment day too has been in my wishlist for a while now and i hope it will be available soon. In The Dark volume 2 is not yet dispatched for me and i cannot wait for it to arrive. I hope more will be coming from Peach Flower House. I'm really satisfied with the paper quality, the cover and everything. When i'm reading a book, i don't like it when the paper is too white maybe its just me. So thats why, i'm really satisfied with Peach Flower House's paper quality, simple yet elegant! My personal ratings, 5 star for the book quality and another five for the story. Give the book a chance if you haven't yet, you'll love it if that genre is to your liking.
