What to Expect from JR Pass for Whole Japan
What is the Japan Rail Pass & What to expect
The Japan Rail Pass for Whole Japan, also known as the JR Pass, is a transportation pass specifically made for foreign visitors to have seamless access to multiple trains and local buses throughout the country via the extensive transportation network operated by the Japan Railways Group.
The JR Pass for Whole Japan is available for durations of 7, 14, or 21 days giving you more flexibility and convenience throughout your Japan trip.
What’s included in the JR Pass for Whole Japan
Unlimited JR Shinkansen Rides
The Japan Rail Pass covers unlimited rides in all JR Shinkansen lines, Limited Express, Express, Rapid, Local trains, and some in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). It allows you easy transportation among major cities in the country, like Tokyo and Osaka, including the famous Tokaido Shinkansen Line, Akita Shinkansen Line, Kyushu Shinkansen Line, Hokkaido Shinkansen Line, and more.
Airport Transfers
Additionally, you can use the JR Pass to board express trains to and from major airports namely, Narita Airport’s Narita Express, Haneda Airport’s Tokyo Monorail, and Kansai International Airport’s Haruka Limited Express.
Local JR Buses
Buses are also covered with your JR Pass, buses included are the JR Hokkaido, JR Tohoku, JR Kanto, JR Tokai, JR Shikoku, JR Kyushu, Nishinihon JR Bus, and the Chugoku JR Bus. Klook Tip: If you’re unsure, just spot the green JR logo on the bus!
What is the difference between Green Cars vs Ordinary Cars?
There are two main seat classes in the Shinkansen, Green Cars (First Class) and Ordinary Cars (Standard). Green Car seats offer first-class service, here you can expect wider legroom and definitely more comfort compared to Ordinary Car seats. Since seats in the Green Car class are also more expensive, they’re generally less crowded.
Seat reservations with the JR Pass
After receiving your JR Pass, you can then reserve your seats at no extra cost! There are two ways to reserve seats – either via a Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) or via the Reserved-Seat Ticket Machines, both of these can be found in JR Stations.
If you decide on the ticket office option, you’ll simply need to show your JR Pass to the staff, and inform them of the train you’ll take. They’ll then show you which seats are available to reserve. Afterwards, you will be given a reserved-seat ticket. You can ppot these offices by looking out for a green logo with a silhouette of a person leaning back on a reclined chair.
For the Reserved-Seat Ticket Machine option, note that not all stations provide this but if available, you just need to scan the QR Code found in your JR Pass and then follow on-screen instructions. These machines can easily be spotted with the same green logo you can find near the midori-no-madoguchi.
How early should you book your JR Pass?
When booking your Japan Rail Pass, you’ll need to book your it at least 2 weeks before your flight to Japan. This ensures that you’ll receive your Exchange Voucher right in time for your trip.
The Exchange Voucher is the document that will be mailed to you or be available for pick-up when you book on Klook. It’s the same Exchange Voucher you’ll need when you travel to Japan in order to exchange it for the actual JR Pass.

I was able to visit 18 prefectures using my 14-day Japan Rail Pass (whole Japan) last November 2023. It was my third time purchasing a Japan-wide pass, but this was the first time I got to fully utilize it.
