    Description of Academic Curriculum Levels

    Academic (Grade) Level

Students in academic (grade) level classes receive instruction that addresses the grade-level learning objectives as outlined by the Texas Education Agency (TEA)  through the state curriculum standards know as Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

    HISD Advanced (HADV) Courses

Students in HISD Advanced (HADV) classes receive instruction that addresses the grade-level learning objectives along with additional skill sets and strategies designed to help students acquire analytical thinking and communication skills necessary for success in Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school. Students who are identified as Gifted and Talented are served in HISD Advanced (HADV) classes.

Students who qualify at the end of sixth grade may take Algebra I in seventh grade and Geometry in eighth grade.  If a student does not qualify for Algebra I in seventh grade, they will continue taking Pre-AP math in seventh grade and will have another opportunity to take Algebra I in eighth grade.  Students who qualify at the end of seventh grade may take Biology in eighth grade.
