"This is a chatty step-by-step guide to living a happy life and getting ahead in a career." —USA Today
"The advice is spot-on for everyone, not just women." —Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com and author of Delivering Happiness
I believe that when it comes to women and work, there isn’t one right answer. The only person who can create a life you’ll love is you.
Our grandmothers fought for the right to work. Our mothers fought for the choice to be in an office or to stay at home. Our generation is the first to fully embrace and celebrate the fact that our lives are multidimensional. Thanks to the women who came before us and paved the way, we can create the lives we want to lead—which look different for each of us.
I’ve been fortunate to be able to build my career around my passions, from real estate to fashion. But my professional titles only begin to describe who I am and what I value. I have been an executive and an entrepreneur, but also—and just as importantly—a wife, mother, daughter, and friend. To me, “work” encompasses my efforts to succeed in all of these areas.
After appearing on The Apprentice years ago and receiving a flood of letters from young women asking for guidance, I realized the need for more female leaders to speak out publicly in order to change the way society thinks and talks about “women who work.” So I created a forum to do just that. This book evolves the conversation that started on IvankaTrump.com, where so many incredible women (and men!) have shared their experiences, advice, ambitions, and passions.
Women who work lead meetings and train for marathons. We learn how to cook and how to code. We inspire our employees and our children. We innovate at our current jobs and start new businesses.
Women Who Work will equip you with the best skills I’ve learned from some of the amazing people I’ve met, on subjects such as identifying opportunities, shifting careers smoothly, negotiating, leading teams, starting companies, managing work and family, and helping change the system to make it better for women—now and in the future. I hope it will inspire you to redefine success and architect a life that honors your individual passions and priorities, in a way only you can.

I am also proud to share I am a first generation immigrant. In the early 1970s, my parents came to America legally from Peru risking the little they had to build a future and fulfill their American dream. Through hard work, perseverance and a strong faith, they achieved their American dream and equipped me and my sister with the same values, tenacity, drive, strong sense of self and heart to serve others. Because of them, I am a minority woman who has MADE IT in every sense of the expression!
As a Latina, I PROUDLY support and share the Women Who Work message and book because it resonates with who I am and outlines the qualities and action steps necessary to succeed in this world as a working woman! How do I know this? Because I have built my career and businesses based on the principles outlined in this book!
Women Who Work speaks to ALL working women regardless of their race, creed, religion, education etc. The book preaches a strong message on the importance of women helping women and the comradery we share in trying to balance work, family and the other myriad of responsibilities the modern woman faces. This book helps blaze a trail that could make our choices easier and helps the reader think outside of the box in terms of broadening your scope of opportunities. Negotiating to win, fostering in person relationships, staking your claim, coming to terms with the fact that balance DOES NOT exist and more importantly living and working with PURPOSE are all important skill sets and principles, all working women must embrace and master to succeed!
I am so grateful to Ivanka for writing this book and for choosing to share her personal experience and PROVEN blueprint for success and I highly recommend Women Who Work to ALL women that desire to improve and work towards personal and professional success with PURPOSE! Being a woman in finance, network marketing and a small business owner, Ivanka’s message of women supporting women is clearly "FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS”.
The book is exactly what it is meant to be; not a scientific analysis of conditions for women in the workplace or set of philosophical, lofty ideals; but a practical, inspirational, exhortatory book to help women "think big" and take control of their success in a whole-hearted way. The title itself is play on the stereotype that has a tendency to come to mind - of a woman who (mostly) sacrifices her personal self, artistic self, and often to a great extent her family life on the altar of committing herself to her job; a one-dimensional woman who works mostly at work instead of who works at making sure work works for her as a full person. The book turns that one-dimensionalization on its head, outlining success in terms of being your full self - working for success in all most important aspects of life.
Be yourself. It is easy enough to say, but real life proves it isn't anywhere as easy to do in the face of the pressures out there.. Stress and depression are everywhere. People can use all the help they can get, especially from someone as someone as beautiful, successful and professionally accomplished as Ivanka, who really is an epitome of a "Woman who works"
The book is besprinkled with quotes from all kinds of figures - philosophers, poets, politicians, business-people, etc. Ivanka's own language is very practical, but never boring and always infused with passion and optimism. She definitely is not tired of what she does and definitely wishes to help other women (and men) as much as she can with what she has learned from in her path(s) to success.
