Bruce Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Perry Funeral Home - Newark on Sep. 23, 2022.

Bruce Matthew Smith was born on December 7, 1958, to the late Nathaniel Smith and the late Mary Palmer Smith in Newark, NJ. He was the 4th of 5 children from this union. He passed away at University Hospital in Newark on September 19, 2022, at 5:22 pm. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Rosalyn Smith (from a previous marriage), Linda Smith Farrell, Keith and Carol Smith.
Bruce was educated in the Newark, NJ School system, first attending Alexander St. Elementary School and then Vailsburg High School. After Graduating High School, he entered the US Army in 1976 and was stationed at Fort Stewart, and later S. Korea. Bruce was discharged from the military in November of 1982 achieving the rank of Corporal. After his military service, he worked for New Community and Babyland from 1983-1991.
Bruce was a jack of all trades. He was skilled in carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing and auto mechanics. You name it, Bruce could fix it! He was known to many as "Mr. Fix it!" He was very gifted with his hands and could complete any task put before him and never backed down from any challenge. Many employers and patrons appreciated his many God-given talents and he never overcharged them for his services. After the job was done, he would say, "Just give me what you want to pay me."
Bruce was a humble and loving human being who truly loved his family unconditionally. He was the true definition of a pure heart as he would drop everything to lend a helping hand to another family member. He treated everyone fairly and with respect, regardless of their title or position. He loved movies, documentaries and TV shows such as "Law and Order", and he loved music, especially Jazz and R&B. He also loved comedies and comedians such as Richard Pryor. He volunteered throughout Newark with many organizations throughout his life, attempting to make life better for others. As a child, Bruce attended the Fresh Air Camping program and YMCA summertime programs, where he fell in love with nature.
The Life of our Beloved Bruce, will be cherished by Sister Beverly Smith and Husband Kevin Jenkins, Brother Rodney Green, Sister Tawana Green-Peoples and her husband Kareem, Brother Christopher Green, Sons: Raymond Burden, and Eric Vasson; First cousins Jerry Hogan, Renee Hogan-Simmons and The Honorable Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins, former Newark City Councilwoman, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, work-family from New Community and Babyland, and dear friends.

Martha Carroll

It broke my heart to hear of Bruce's passing as I have considered him and his family as extended members of my family, since first meeting them when I came to work at Babyland in 1983. Bruce had a gentle spirit, and an unforgettable smile. Family, friends, and acquaintances of Bruce, my family and I extend our sincerest condolences for your loss. May he forever rest in peace!
