According to a progressive rock poll, less than 10% of so-called Genesis fans have Tony Banks solo albums. A pity, as he is the heart, soul and head writer of Genesis most challenging compositions from 1978 onward. His best release is A Curious Feeling, followed by Strictly, Inc., Still, and Bankstatement.
Completists will be interested in this recording featuring the rock instrumental soundtrack on side A, and orchestrated score on B. I have owned Tony Banks' The Wicked Lady soundtrack on cassette since its 1983 release. Since it has never been transferred to CD, this vinyl LP version will make a better quality transfer for my personal enjoyment.

If you like Tony Banks classical albums, "Seven", "Six" and "Five" you will surely enjoy this. The Genesis keyboard player here composing his first excellent soundtrack, and making an excellent job of it. Forget the movie, soak up the music.

At last a CD release of one of the great film scores of the Eighties. Tony Banks themes, orchestrated for the film by the late great Christopher Palmer, are simply wonderful. I wore out two copies of the LP years ago so it's great to finally have the score on CD. Now if only a DVD of the movie would be released.

Finally available on cd. An excellent soundtrack from Tony Banks. Hard to believe it has taken this long for this gem.

Beautiful music from the great Tony Banks!

It's in two sections, really: the first 8 tracks are piano/synth instrumentals that recall passages from A Curious Feeling (ie, Waters of Lethe, After the Lie) or Duke (ie, Heathaze, Cul-de-Sac, Duchess). The tune Barbara pretty much sums up the complexity and effect Tony's going for here, while the uptempo title track (the only one with Roland drums) was released a single (b/w the orchestral version).
The second half is the actual film score by Christopher Palmer, who took Tony's melodies and arranged them for full orchestra. Syrupy in some places, breathtaking in others, and always lovely. In interviews Banks has spoken fondly of the project (unlike the failures of The Shout or 2010, for example) and you will too upon hearing it.
Long out of print, it never made the jump to CD (all the more disappointing given that it was a digital recording and was released at the dawn of the CD age), but used LPs and cassettes can be found in shops & online. The US release has inferior artwork (a cheesy drawing of the male cast cowering by a bed); better instead to track down its German counterpart, which reproduces a very nice movie poster on the cover and select film stills on the back -- including a thumbnail of the sultry Marina in that duel!
NB: some enterprising chap has converted the cassette into MP3 and those files can be located on the Web as well, with a bit of patience.
Recorded at the same time as Tony's second solo album, The Fugitive, this is the OST to the remake of The Wicked Lady. Hardly a hit, the film is now best remembered for a faux-SM whipping duel between Faye Dunaway and a topless Marina Sirtis. Not a subject you'd associate with the classical genius behind much of the best Genesis material, but fans will be very pleased if they can track down a copy of this score.

The Not So Wicked Lady
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 7, 2014
I fully support the comments made by previous reviewers. This album has been a long time in the waiting to come out in CD format but after such a long time (31 years) it has finally been re-released. The album being split into the orchestral and Tony Bank keyboard demos still works although when it was originally released on vinyl this formed two separate sides whereas on CD this is not the case.
I never originally liked the orchestral stuff, as an ardent admirer of Tony Bank's work within Genesis I was always interested to hear what he would produce as a solo artist. His first album "A Curious Feeling" felt very much like a lost Genesis album, so the first time I heard this album I was quite surprised/shocked and didn't necessarily like it. However with subsequent listening realised how clever his music was with his keyboards emulating classical instruments.
Listening now after 30 years the keyboards do sound a bit dated whereas the classical pieces retain their flow. But on the whole this is a good album which few Genesis fans will have heard and like much of his solo work most probably never will. And that is the real shame.
For a modern CD release it is also a shame that Tony couldn't find a little bit more music to have packed into it as bonus tracks to attract the selling price which for such an old album is a little on the steep side.

Hello friend, welcome home!

Finally, Tony Banks's soundtrack album to The Wicked Lady is out on CD officially 31 years after it first appeared on vinyl via the Atlantic label in a different sleeve! Tony's sleeve notes say the film didn't do so well at the time, and it has since appeared on TV - surely a DVD release must be in the offing? It has equally as much boob shots as, say, The Look Of Love, and I'd say it was set in the same era as A Cock & Bull Story (yes, I do wish Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon's Tristan Shandy adaptation had had some of Tony's music in it!).
The orchestral settings by Christopher Palmer make it more bona fide film music than the keyboard demoes Tony did, but it's the keyboard versions I like best because they are so much HIM. Caroline's theme and Kit are my standout tracks.
Tony said these tracks were recorded around the same time as The Fugitive, his second more song-based album; and I loved that too. TWL is the more English country garden side of him while The Fugitive is more city based. Love the label logo too - it combines the Fugitive character and Wuluwait from A Curious Feeling in his shadow!

The poisoned chalice
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 14, 2013
What was Tony Banks to do when offered this job? The film was always likely to be awful (and was) but I expect he was unaware of the tawdry soft porn asides that really do lower the tone of the film. This soundtrack is pretty good without being spectacular, a bit like Tony Banks' other classical works. Funnily enough, the synthesised versions of the soundtrack work better in some ways - I used to play the synthesised title track on 45 when I had the LP of this, a fact that does not assist in any way with this review. If you are a fan of Tony Banks, it will come as no surprise that he makes a decent job of this, but he reserved his genius for his day job with Genesis.

endlich auf CD
Reviewed in Germany on June 5, 2013
Also abwarten...

Bastante Flojito
Reviewed in Spain on March 23, 2015
