I'm just saying that the horror genre is historical for excluding the African American element.

–Maureen to Phil Stevens

Maureen Evans is a minor character who appears in the opening of Scream 2 (1997 film). She was a senior at Windsor College. She was a biomedical student and reluctantly attended the sneak-preview opening of Stab at midnight with her boyfriend, Phil Stevens, despite having a biology test in the morning.

Maureen and her boyfriend were murdered by a copycat Ghostface serial killer, later revealed to be Mickey Altieri. She was the second character to fall victim in the second Ghostface killing spree. Maureen was targeted based on her name being the same of the first ever Ghostface victim, Maureen Prescott and had no connection or awareness of Sidney Prescott.

Biography

1998 The Windsor College Murders

Maureen and her boyfriend decided to watch the preview, Stab, directed by Robert Rodriguez. As the couple enters the theatre, a majority of the audience is seen wearing Ghostface masks. Phil also wears one. Maureen displays frustration and annoyance, stating that she is not to be fond of horror films. Inevitably, she shows annoyance with Stab and Heather Graham's character, Casey Becker being shown nude, while Phil does not mind.

She asks for money to get popcorn and then leaves to get it. As she goes in line, she overhears one girl saying that it’a a true story and the kids actually got killed a couple years ago in California. (first reference to the original events of Scream)

Not a fan of scary movies: Maureen, slightly disgusted and fed up with Stab

As she goes back with the popcorn, Phil barges out of the closet scaring her. She admits not liking being afraid. He comforts her and they kiss and he reminds her that it’s just a movie. He tells her that he will see her inside as he has to use the restroom. When he goes to the bathroom, he is stabbed through the side of his head by the killer.

The killer then steals his jacket and pretends to be him, when they sit next to Maureen in the cinema. As she realizes it’s blood on his jacket, she looks again at the killer only for him to pull the knife out and stab her in the stomach the first time while sitting.

She gets up and tries to run away, but Ghostface catches up to her and continues to stab her repeatedly in the back (most thinking it was a publicity stunt, but some suspecting it to be real). She is stabbed repeatedly and quickly during the commotion of Stab’s first kill scene with Casey Becker.

The killer stabs her a total of seven times in the crowded cinema. She climbs up on to the stage and lets out a final wail. Then, just as the crowd notices she has been stabbed for real, she drops dead on stage.

In the aftermath of her death, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley explain from her name, Maureen, that the killer is replicating the original Woodsboro killing series because Maureen is the same name of Sidney Prescott's mother, the first victim of the Woodsboro killers.

Death

Maureen Scream

One last scream: Maureen in pain as the whole Stab audience sees her die a slow and painful death

Maureen is killed by Ghostface (Mickey), who dresses in her boyfriend's coat and keeps the mask on to conceal their identity, as they return to the theatre, where Maureen is sitting. She believes the killer to be her boyfriend, but after having blood rub upon her hands from the coat, discovers otherwise. Then, the killer pulls up a knife and stabs Maureen in the stomach first.

Maureen tries to flee, but is continuously stabbed in the back by the killer in the aisle of the theater, leaving her to collapse to her bloody death before the whole viewing audience of Stab realize, she is dying for real.

In the aftermath of her death, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley discover from Chief Hartley the name of Maureen, Gale comes to the end that Maureen was chosen as one of the victims because she shares the same name as Maureen Prescott, Sidney's mother.

  • "Bitch, hang up the phone and Star 69 his ass! Damn!"
  • "Why is she naked? What has that got to do with the plot; her being butt-ass naked?"
  • "You better loosen up that wrist."
  • "It's some dumb-ass white movie about some dumb-ass white girls getting their white asses cut the fuck up, okay?"
  • "I'm just saying that the horror genre is historical for excluding the African American element."
  • "I got my money. I asked for your money."

Trivia

  • Following the tradition of the Scream franchise, famous actress and Hollywood royalty Jada Pinkett Smith was highly promoted as a main character, but when the movie was released her character Maureen is killed off in the opening.
  • She was described as "no more than 18. A friendly face with innocent eyes" in the initial script.
  • In the theatrical release, she is a 22-year-old Windsor senior, and 3 years older than Sidney. She is stated to be a senior posthumously.
  • Dislikes horror films.
  • The only famous Second Victim of her respective film who did not receive a phone call prior to her murder. (Casey Becker* in Scream (1996), Cotton Weary in Scream 3 (2000), Jenny Randall in Scream 4 (2011), and Judy Hicks in Scream 5 (2022) all received a call).
    • Casey Becker* is technically the third victim of her massacre (following Maureen Prescott and Steven), but in terms of on-screen events in the films, she is the second victim seen on-screen. The first murder victim of all Ghostface killings, Maureen Prescott dies off-screen one year prior.
  • Unfamiliar with Sidney Prescott, and murdered due to having the same name as her mother.
  • Given Mickey is a contract serial killer, it makes sense that he has targeted two individuals he does not personally know. However, it is possible that he knew Phil, attending the same college. It is also implied Mickey Altieri gave her boyfriend, Phil the "free tickets".
  • Collectively, she and Phil are the first named Black characters (Reporter with Mask to be first in general) to appear in the Scream franchise.
  • The pairing are also the first African-American characters to ever be killed in the Scream franchise, Phil being killed first and then Maureen being second ghostface victim.
  • Maureen, along with Phil, are the only opening scenes victims from any film to not get a phone call by Ghostface before their deaths. They are also the only ones to be killed in a public area; a theatre.
  • Maureen and Phil's scene is spoofed in Scary Movie by Brenda Meeks and Ray Wilkins, who are played by Regina Hall and Shawan Wayans respectively. At first glance both Brenda and Ray seem to meet similar fates to Maureen and Phil. At the Climax of the movie Ray and Bobby Prinze (a parody of Billy Loomis and Ray Bronson from I know What you did Last Summer) in a similar fashion to Billy Loomis and Stu Macher reveal themselves to be the killers. Unlike those two, Ray accidently stabs Bobby to death in rage over the Wayan's Brothers (which starred Shawn and his Brother Marlon Wayans, who played shorty in Scary Movie) show never getting a final episode. Ray is then attacked by the killer who is revealed at the end of the movie to be Doofy Gilmore (a parody of Dewey Riley).
