I don't know if this is the last version of the OED before they left off making downloadable utilities, but if it isn't, I don't care anymore. I was ready to tear my hair out with all the versions of the Oxford dictionary on
Archive.org which either were inferior 'learner' dictionaries, or just plain broken.
This one, on the other hand, just works. That, and it's the full OED 2! Not a learning dictionary or a concise dictionary or a collative dictionary or a student's dictionary: it is the full thing, with the origins of words and examples of classical usage, and you just need to launch the executable!
For example, here's the definition of the word
dictatress:
(dɪkˈteɪtrɪs)
[f. dictator + -ess. Cf. next.]
A female dictator. lit. and fig.
1784 R. Bage Barham Downs II. 1 Vanity was the universal dictatress. 1809 Byron Bards & Rev. li, Earth's chief dictatress, ocean's lovely queen. 1827 Scott Napoleon lxxvi, Paris‥the dictatress‥of taste‥to‥Europe. 1874 Helps Ivan De Biron v. vi. 290 She was a dictatress in all matters that related to the dress, scenery, and general arrangements.
I had to choose a short one, and that's the beauty of this little utility. Finally, all of the Oxford English Dictionary without sifting through seventeen volumes (or needing to go on the internet, which always bugs me).
A fantastic resource for people who love learning more about words, and finally one that actually works!
