This is just one of many films that prove how dangerous China's censorship to artistic expression, this could be Leste Chen's back to form after disappointing flops, in the same vein of his little gem, 盛夏光年 / Eternal Summer.
It started just like your regular trendy drama that populates China's airwaves and cinemas (an obvious compromised from the creative team) but when the second act kicked in, everything was so inspired that gave us one of the best scenes I saw this year - I'm talking about that whole music festival scene, brutally honest and heartbreakingly beautiful. This is an ode to unrequited love.
But the feeling that we're not getting the director's intended cut --- why not show Ming's…
if a guy played his dj edm mixtape on my birthday, istg i would pack my things and move to a different country
"In the future, if the people we like can also like us, how nice would that be?"
upcoming summer is such a beautiful film and sad at the same time. it's lighthearted, funny, cute, and touch of drama.
the feeling of being abandoned by someone you love. this really hurts me, i've been there too.
definitely my second favorite films of the year so far after my blood & bones in a flowing galaxy
i've watched it three times in less than 24 hours. it has so many layers messages and little details that people won't probably get it the first time you watch. this is the kind of movie you'd have to watch it twice or more.
Chinese censorship is so effective that I am so sure I am watching diligently but still missed the LGBT aspect of the story (I only found out after reading some reactions). I feel so dumb or manipulated lol. Still, I like this as a coming of age film.
things i didn't like about Upcoming Summer:
- the colour grading makes it look like there's a permanent f.lux filter on
- the chainsmokers' "something just like this" is yuxing's favourite song and plays at least 3 times
- the behind the scenes bloopers during the credits are infinitely more cute than the "romantic" scripted scenes
- it ends with a superimposed "moral of the story" as if its audience can't understand subtlety (not really anyone's fault, most mainland movies do this)
things i liked:
- literally everything else.
this movie made me come to terms with the fact that i'm a big fucking sap, and i'm okay with it if it means i can unabashedly enjoy shit like this.…
