Peter Stone

Peter Stone is a former Assistant State's Attorney in Chicago, and the former assistant district attorney for the Special Victims Unit in New York City.

History[]

Stone was the second child born to former E.A.D.A. Benjamin Stone. His older sister Pamela suffered from schizophrenia and lived in a mental ward. Before becoming a lawyer, Stone was a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs' Minor League system but was forced to retire when he tore an elbow ligament and decided to follow his father's footsteps. Prior to becoming the Assistant District Attorney, he worked as Deputy Chief of the Special Prosecutions Bureau in the Cook County State's Attorney's office. (Chicago Justice)

After the death of his father, Stone attended his funeral. In attendance were District Attorney Jack McCoy and A.D.A. Rafael Barba. Jack McCoy delivered the eulogy, and later, the duo reminisced on Benjamin's last days, with Stone saying that he was never close to his father. Later, Stone began crying over his loss after entering an empty courtroom and remembering his father.

Stone later became Special Counsel during Barba's trial after he ended the life of an infant boy suffering from MDDS by turning off his life support. Although Barba was acquitted of all charges, he was too traumatized by the incident and resigned. As a result, Stone took his job as the A.D.A. assigned to the Special Victims Unit. After a teenage girl went missing on a field trip, Stone's key witness the music teacher did not show up in court before it was revealed he was the reason the girl vanished. Stone was disgusted to later learn they were father and daughter but didn't know. He and Benson went over the case, as she told him of her experiences with this type of thing while he says this case wouldn't discourage and soon reveals his sister Pamela was diagnosed with schizophrenia and her father always visited her but now that he is dead that job falls on him. At a bar, Stone received a threat regarding Pamela whilst the SVU were investigating a case and was warned to drop the case. However, he did not back down and his sister was then kidnapped during an attack at her mental ward. He was horrified when she was held captive and called out to him, only to be shot in a standoff between the police and her kidnapper, before the man was gunned down by Fin, Carisi, and ESU. Stone rushed to his sister to help her, but she died in his arms. This deeply traumatized him, and he cried in Benson's arms in his office. (SVU: "Remember Me Too")

Later, Stone welcomed both Benson and Carol Solomon to teach rape and murder suspect Tony Kelly a lesson. Tony tried to attack Carol, but Benson restrained him while Stone protected Carol. Stone then helped Benson arrest Tony for raping Carol and killing her fiancé. (SVU: "Revenge")

Stone was accused of rape by a woman named Sarah Kent and charges were pressed against him. Benson arrested Stone for rape but later released him. Afterwards, he was held hostage by Sarah's husband Gary Kent. Suddenly, Benson rescued Stone, who allowed the police to arrest Gary. It was soon discovered that Stone's friend Reggie Gregg was the rapist and had set up Stone. Benson arrested Gregg for rape, resulting in the charges against Stone being dropped. Despite his name being cleared, he felt guilty because Gregg was supposedly a friend who betrayed him and was shocked at how Kent believed Stone was the father of her child until a DNA test proved her husband was the father. Peter worked a case that was previously worked by his father involving a serial rapist known as "Infinity" for years until it went cold in 1994. Peter recalled his father making him and his sister go to the home of his aunt. He confided in Carisi on how this strained his relationship with Ben. Eventually, Peter discovered his father was only trying to protect him and his sister once he found letters and pictures that revealed the rapist was stalking them and how they were sent away to be safe. Peter vowed to catch the rapist after he resurfaced decades later, the case making him realize how his father felt with the elusive criminal. When he met the perp, he was greatly angered but soon got the perp to confess after bringing up his father. With direction from Benson, he decided to accept the past and move on. To relieve his nerves from the case, Peter took Noah out for a baseball game. (SVU: "Dear Ben")

During the Rob Miller case, Stone collaborated with Nikki Staines to get Miller convicted for the murder of Lindsay Parker based on purely circumstantial evidence, endangering his career and disregarding his ethics in the process, partially on Benson's behalf despite her misgivings. Desiring to distance himself from any potential reprisal regarding the Miller case, as well as realizing the effect the SVU and its cases have on him, Stone ceases further work with the SVU and leaves the precinct, but not before wishing Benson good luck in her future. Years ago, Peter was a professional baseball player in the Chicago Cubs' Minor League system. He was briefly called up to the major leagues, but he was forced to retire from the game due to an injury.
