King William III History

William was born in The Hague in the Dutch Republic. His mother, Mary, was the eldest daughter of King Charles I. A staunch Protestant, William spent much of his early life in war with the various factions across Europe. With conflict dragging on he married his first cousin, Mary, to strengthen his position.

Public dislike of the current King, James II, led William and Mary to invade and depose the King. At first James resisted but soon fled the country when he saw that he had little support. William and Mary were crowned together in 1689. Their reign saw some dispute over the legitimacy of their rule with Jacobite rebellions taking place in Scotland.

William died of pneumonia in 1702 following a horse-riding injury. His marriage to Mary had yielded no children and his sister-in-law Anne succeeded him to the throne.
