The Flash director Andy Muschietti explains why TV's Barry Allen, Grant Gustin, does not have a cameo in the movie. Ezra Miller stars as Barry Allen, with The Flash's story loosely adapting the comic book event known as Flashpoint. The film sees Miller's Flash traverse the multiverse and meet different characters from DC's live-action history, with some cameos said to be kept under wraps. One of the most requested cameos for The Flash is Gustin, who will end his time as TV's Barry Allen this year with the currently airing The Flash season 9. However, Gustin has said he is not in The Flash, which Muschietti now explains.

Nerdist reports that Muschietti addressed Gustin's absence from the movie after a special screening of The Flash. Answering a question from Dorian Parks from Geeks of Color, Muschietti revealed that Gustin almost had a cameo in The Flash as the Arrowverse version of the speedster. However, there was no room for the actor in the end, as Muschietti noted the list of potential cameos was big, saying that The Flash's team "played with the idea of including DC characters from TV," but it ultimately did not work out for Gustin. Of course, as I said before the list of cameos…was huge. So obviously we played with the idea of including DC characters from TV, but we just had to pick.

Why Grant Gustin Deserved To Be In The Flash Movie

The Flash movie will not have Grant Gustin

Gustin debuted as Barry Allen in 2013 with a two-episode arc in Arrow season 2. After his successful appearances, the actor signed on to lead an Arrow spinoff series, The Flash, which would go on to become one of DC's most popular shows in history, making Gustin the first name that comes to mind when thinking of The Flash in live-action. Funnily enough, DC announced Miller was cast to lead The Flash movie only a week after Gustin's series premiered.

Years passed, and Miller's The Flash movie, which was originally slated to release in theaters in 2018, now arrives this June. While Miller has appeared in other DCEU movies both as a cameo and a lead, Gustin has successfully brought Barry Allen to life throughout The Flash's nine seasons. As Gustin's time in the role comes to a close this May, a month before Miller's The Flash is finally released, the actor deserved to get a cameo in the movie as a way of honoring his legacy as Barry Allen over the last decade.

While the DCEU encountered a number of problems over the past years, the Arrowverse showed audiences that a live-action shared universe of DC characters was not only possible, but a great idea. Gustin had a huge part in doing so, with his version of The Flash being one of the Arrowverse's trio of leads, alongside Stephen Amell's Green Arrow and Melissa Benoist's Supergirl. Miller even appeared face-to-face with Gustin as both versions of The Flash met during the Arrowverse crossover event Crisis On Infinite Earths. Given Gustin's long history keeping The Flash and DC popular, it is a shame that he is absent from Muschietti's The Flash.
