A King's Story: The Memoirs of H.R.H. the Duke of Windsor K.G. (Lost Treasures Series) Paperback – March 16, 1999

"Given my character, my roving curiosity and independence, my life appeared to form a disconnected pattern--duty without decision, service without responsibility, pomp without power. Meanwhile, something had happened that, although I did not realise it at the time, was destined to change the whole course of my life. I met Wallis Warfield Simpson." Written in 1951, in his own hand, this is the story of a man raised to be king, a man who abdicated the throne to marry an American divorce. Theirs was to become the most famous love affair of this century. In this poignant, elegantly written memoir, the Duke recalls his austere upbringing, his days at Oxford, the Great War, his profound love for Wallis Simpson and the growing crisis over the affair, and the appalling dilemma that confronted him in the final months leading up to his abdication.

I think it was a very well Well written memoir. I think it gives a good insight to how he lives his life growing up and even as a royal person he still a person who had his triumphs and challenges like all of us. He was put in a very difficult position and honestly I can’t judge him no one can if he honestly love the person then I can understand why he gave it up. This book is very good details about his travels India Australia Canada also he talks about his relationship with his brothers and his father interesting bits of information throughout the book. Overalls quite a good book I recommended for people that want to understand someone’s life who is quite interesting. Also the added photos in the book add a good visualization. Perhaps hopefully one day audible can make an audio version of this book and pick someone who has his similar voice because he had a very elegant and particular way of speaking.

King Edward VIII is more than a KING. And beyond his story, he is quite the literary scholar. Very well composed text and this is a book that would serve students well, and teachers, in order to teach students to write properly, effectively, and correctly.

The story, itself, is a true accounting, right from the horse's mouth, about the events, truths, and falsehoods, surrounding King Edward VIII's abdication from the throne. The story is all in his words. He wrote this while in his prime, while the events were ever prominent in his mind. He leaves nothing unturned. Great book. Great story. Great King. Great man.

My impressions of the Duke of Windsor were not particularly good before I bought the book but after reading his memoirs I changed my mind somewhat. Being born into the royal family makes for a difficult life in my estimation and being the monarch is the worst job I think anyone could have. This book just reinforces that but David does not complain nearly as much as I would. I was really surprised that one of his passions was gardening (mine too) and to read about him planning his annuals for spring and fall and actually digging in his garden did change my view of him. Unfortunately he didn't discuss in any depth some of the issues I wanted to read about such as the problems he caused his brother Bertie, the future King George VI, by abdicating and why he ignored the danger posed by Adolf Hitler in the late 1930's.

Decently written memoir, emphasizing the Duke's early work as Prince of Wales. He kept a very busy schedule with extensive travel representing his father King George V, but its unlikely that he worked any harder than an industrial laborer of his time. The memoir ignored all of his adulterous love affairs prior to his meeting Wallace Simpson. His subsequent whining about his desertion of his duty as King Edward VIII for the personal reason of wanting to be married to Mrs. Simpson, unacceptable as Queen, was unconvincing.

To read what Edward wrote himself, rather than what other people wrote about him, was fascinating.
