Martha Madison’s last appearance as Days of Our Lives‘ Belle was, to be blunt, more than a little unusual. She was representing Gabi as the schemer was shipped off to prison for Li’s murder, vowing to new district attorney EJ that it wasn’t over. They were officially at war. And then… we never saw her again.

We’ve been assuming that Belle’s out there somewhere in Salem, working away in the background, but then, at Jude’s christening party, we learned that she was off with Shawn — wherever he’s going to rehab. We guess he finally relented on his decision to go it alone.

Madison, on the other hand, just popped up on our screens to win The Weakest Link when she and her Days of Our Lives co-stars competed for charity (you can see what she had to say about the experience here) — but that doesn’t mean she’s on her way back to Salem!

The episode taped a year and a half ago, when the cast of Days of Our Lives looked very different. But between the hilarious game show appearance and Belle’s mention at the christening, we’re suddenly realizing just how much she needs to come back — which Madison could be up for!

The actress may have stepped away, but when she spoke with Soaps.com about her Weakest Link appearance, she shared that she’s not opposed to returning.

“I’d love to go back at some point,” Madison said, “but I’d want it to be for an actual story. I don’t want Belle to be wallpaper, just hanging around in the background. I love acting, but I’ve worked really hard to put myself in a position where I don’t need it.”

She’s currently running her own business, Madison Collective, which means she doesn’t have to go back just to have Belle file a legal briefing here and there.

In the DiMera mansion, Belle glowers at EJ. Holding a drink, he points at her and raises his eyebrows.

“Being able to have my own business and doing something that I’m very passionate about gives me the unique and wonderful opportunity to be very selective,” she shared. “So I know what I’d like to do, and if it’s ever presented, great.”

The thing is, the show has all the story it needs just waiting for Belle. Heck, if we didn’t know any better, we’d say it was practically setting up her return! First off, Gabi’s still in prison and that has got to be resolved at some point. She hasn’t been tried, she hasn’t been convicted and we’re all pretty darn sure she didn’t actually kill Li.

That could provide the perfect way for Belle to return and actually pick up that war with EJ. In the end, Gabi would be proven innocent and EJ, after losing that case and all the egg on his face with railroading Tate, may have to finally resign as DA.

nicole blabs sami's secret days of our lives

But it wouldn’t stop there, because we all know EJ and Nicole are a ticking time bomb, once the truth about Jude finally comes out. Why would she stay with EJ when she could reunite with the actual father of her child? Plus, we know that Arianne Zucker is, sadly, out, though it’s not clear if that means Nicole will be as well just yet.

We all know about the thin line between love and hate, and we also know that Belle and EJ have already crossed it once. This time, after their battle, and after EJ loses his government job and his family, he and Belle could try for round two. No more worrying about Shawn or Sami — they could just give in to the draw they feel and give in to their passion.

Madison, for her part, loves Dan Feuerriegel “to pieces. I mean, who wouldn’t? And there was so much to the Belle/EJ dynamic, given the history… with or without Sami, there’s still this history.”

It’s a history they could build on to move past a fling and into a real relationship. And on top of that, someone would have to be the new DA once EJ’s out. Melinda has gone so far off the rails with the baby snatching that we’d be surprised if she stayed out of prison, let alone keep her law license.

Belle wraps her arms around EJ's neck

That’s where Belle would step in, making her relationship with a less-than scrupulous EJ all the more volatile and exciting. We don’t need to see them butting heads as much as “EJami,” but their pairing would keep Days of Our Lives and Salem on its toes!

The pieces are all there and the writing is on the wall for Belle’s return in a big way. Now we just need Days of Our Lives to actually do it.
