I watched it on you tube to see if it was worth buying and great for when I start teaching my students about slavery. I also wanted to know if it showed any nudity or obscene scenes and was quite pleased to find out none of that was depicted in the movie. The movie is great for middle school children and perfect if you are planning on teaching your students about the Underground Railroad. The movie is great at showing what exactly is the underground railroad. They do include the character of Harriet Tubman in the movie and information about slavery as well as the role that Canada played with the underground railroad. Overall I was very pleased with the movie and can't wait to show my students the film as an intro to Ch 13 of their U.S. History 8 textbooks. I highly recommend this movie to any teacher who is teaching about slavery and the underground railroad. It also would be great if you allow your students to listen to the song Follow the Drinking Gourd prior to showing the movie so that they understand the movie a little better. I found that the Weavers version of the song is pretty good since it gives the students an explanation of what exactly the song is saying prior to singing it.

I teacher 8th graders and we watched this on a recommendation from another teacher in my district. I'm always hesitant to watch longer movies with limited class time, but this one was well worth it. I think it gave the kids a very real perspective of the challenges of the Underground Railroad and what slaves both faced and risked. Keep in mind that there is some less than acceptable language and ways of treating others based on the time period, but it was nothing I found inappropriate and it wasn't over the top in any way - merely reflective of that reality. I found it to be worth the class time and my students had positive things to say about it afterwards, which to me, is the biggest indicator of it being a good movie to show.

I bought this to use with my sophomore US history course, and was very pleased with the content and quality. It has been helpful to use to supplement the material I was teaching, and reinforce what they had already learned. It's not graphic like Twelve Years a Slave (though that one is also wonderful) but is more appropriate for younger/less mature kids. I imagine middle schoolers would also benefit from this film.

Great Film , I been a Huge fan of Courtney B. Vance since I was a Kid. I love his deep dramatic Films, Such as Hamburger Hill (1987.) Race to Freedom (1994.) Dangerous Minds (1995.) The Affair (1995.) And Blind Faith (1998.) And last (Final Destination 5 )-(2011.) Courtney Vance is so talented when it comes down to how to present a role according to his actions in Films that's he's in.

I am Australian, have never believed in Slavery. all are equal in our Creators will.. There were times that this film made me tearful, other moments of shame of the ruthful, cruelty, of treatment of others. Sadly we are seeing today no lesson learnt by some folk. It is a blot on the American history and any other country where this is and has happened. This film is well told, well acted. and may your heart be sensitive to making sure it will not happen again. I am thankful to have seen it. I recommend this film to all.

This movie was amazing! It was riveting and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

It was also very educational. I didn't know the full story of the Underground Railroad--that there was a time when many slaves were no longer safe in the northern part of the states and had to eventually go all the way to Canada to become truly free. This movie really provided some needed information that many don't know about African American history. The acting was superb. I highly recommend.

Wasn't as dramatic as I expected but it was suspenseful. I enjoyed it despite but it wasn't as good as Roots or the like. So I give it 3 stars for watchable - mainly for the great characters :-)

The Truth
5.0 out of 5 stars THIS WAS NOT A REAL RAILROAD

It is important for the Black race to know that the underground railroad were the houses of people both Black and White alike who fought against slavery because it was wrong. The majority though were White people, some of whom were also lynched for helping the Africans. They were not all the same.

Another excellent movie based on the true story of the Underground Railway which was a network of safe houses and kind people who helped black slaves escape from bondage in the USA to freedom in Canada. A MUST for all Canadian lovers of history!
