Burnett Wins Region Title; Vikings Sending Six to NCAA Championships

MINOT, N.D. – Hunter Burnett won a region championship, while the Augustana wrestling team placed third overall at the NCAA Super Region V tournament. The Vikings will send six wrestlers to the NCAA DII Championships in Wichita, Kansas. They totaled 118.5 points as a team, with St. Cloud State and Parkside edging out AU.

Jaxson Rohman, Hunter Burnett, Cael Larson, Cade Mueller, Max Ramberg, and Zach Peterson will represent Augustana March 15-16 at the National Championships.

Rohman was the first to punch his ticket for the Vikings at 125 pounds. After earning a tech fall over Lucas Ryan of Minnesota State, he saw his match with Jaden Verhagen come down to the wire, but Rohman pulled through with a decision to advance to the region final. He closed the night, finishing second.

For the fourth time in his career, Burnett earned his way to National Qualifier status. The senior opened his day with a pair of pins, first against Hunter Pfantz and then against Kaden DeCoteau of UMary. He then knocked off Alyeus Craig of St. Cloud State for the second time this season via decision to secure his spot in the National Tournament. Burnett left a lasting impression in his final career regional match, earning a first-period pin over No. 3 Cayden Henschel of Parkside to earn his first career region title at 141 pounds.

For just the first time, Larson became a national qualifier. The redshirt freshman earned a tech fall and pin on his way to the semifinals where he knocked off No. 11 Jalen Spuhler by decision to become a national qualifier and give himself a chance at the region title. Larson ultimately fell in the title bout, finishing second at 149 pounds.

Mueller ended up with a pair of victories to get to the region final and earn a spot in the national tournament. He earned a tech fall before defeating No. 9 Wyatt Linberg in overtime to earn a spot in the region final. Mueller lost narrowly to place second.

Ramberg started his trek with a bye and then a victory over Chase Stegall of Parkside to reach the semifinals. After dropping a close decision, he battled back with a win over No. 7 Matt Kaylor of UMary and a pin of Minot State’s Cannon Potts in the third place match to earn his spot in the national tournament.

Rounding out the qualifiers was Peterson. The Perham, Minnesota native was gutty throughout the day, earning a win over No. 7 Jake Swirple of Minot State in sudden victory and then knocking off Jacob Dykes of SMSU following a loss to make his way to the third-place match. Peterson then proved his earlier victory with another sudden victory over Swirple to keep his season alive.
