Adamstown Community Days Memorial Day Weekend Celebration

Community Days

The annual Adamstown Community Days (ACD) carnival will take place once again over Memorial Day weekend. This fourday event will begin on Thursday, May 23 and continue through Sunday, May 26.

“Tons of Fun Shows” will provide as many rides as they can fit in the park! Carnival hours are Thursday and Friday, 5:00

p.m. to 10:00 p.m., as well as Saturday and Sunday, 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. All events will take place in the Adamstown Grove located just off Route 272, next to the Adamstown pool. As always, parking and carnival admission are free. There will also be free professional entertainment every evening under the

large tent. There are a limited number of chairs provided, however we do suggest you bring your own as there is plenty of room to set up and enjoy the shows.

The popular ACD Raffle will return again this year with a variety of amazing prizes including sports memorabilia, tickets to fun

Ephrata Mayor Proudly Signs Buddy Poppy Proclamation

The Buddy Poppy is the official Memorial flower of the VFW and every year they hold a Buddy Poppy distribution across the United States.

Locally, Ephrata Mayor Ralph Mowen signed an official proclamation recognizing the significance of this special event. The VFW has Buddy Poppies available at the Post, and VFW members will be passing out the poppies and collecting donations for their veterans support programs at the Green Dragon on Friday, May 24.

R. Marlene Haines

R. Marlene Haines, 87, of Lititz, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Lancaster Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Lancaster to the late Alvin and Grace (Whitcraft) Eberly and was the wife of the late Paul Haines.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Ephrata. Marlene worked as a beautician for Watt & Shand Beauty Salon and parttime at Moravian Manor Beauty Salon. In her free time, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, reading, and cooking. Marlene is survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

William A. “Bill” Ludwig, 68, East Earl, passed away on Saturday, April 27.

He was the husband of the late Jean M. Kauffman Ludwig.

He is survived by a daughter, Melissa Ludwig, wife of William Fisher, Nottingham; two stepsons: Steve, husband of Rebecca Hackman, Schaefferstown, and Greg, husband of Josie Hackman, Newmanstown; 11 grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; and a sister,

William A. “Bert” Dillingham

William A. “Bert” Dillingham, 91, of Brecknock Township, passed away Saturday, April 13th, 2024, at the Reading Hospital. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, Bert was a son to the late Elmer and Edith (Rice) Dillingham. Bert was the loving husband to Mildred (Spicher) Dillingham for nearly 50 years until her passing in 2020.

Bert was a graduate of Sand Hill High School, class of 1952. After graduating from high school, Bert went directly into the U.S. Navy. His navy career opened up his lifelong career in welding, eventually owning his own welding business called “Bert’s Welding” for approximately 50 years. Bert

There is one lesson we have learned since we have been writing Dutch columns. It is impossible to imagine just where the next poem ­ or batch of poems ­ will come from. Recently, six poems from the pen of the late Alice Ziemer

Brice of Adamstown reached us from Aylmer in the province of Ontario in Canada. Our friend and Amish historian David Luthy, who lives near Aylmer, came upon them in some material he had purchased for his Amish Historical Library. David knows of our Dutch ECK in the Sugarcreek, Ohio, BUDGET and kindly sent these six poems to us. Since these six poems are so interesting and THE SHOPPING NEWS is distributed to every family in Adamsschteddel, we have declared the month of April, 1987 to be an Alice Ziemer Brice Month. Each week this month, we will feature one of these poems. So this is the beginning of an Alice Ziemer Brice Festival.

Naturally, we knew of the Ziemer family in Adamstown but we had not known Alice Ziemer, the wife of Elwood C. Brice. We got on the wire to Adamsschteddel and had a long conversation with our cousin, Maude Beam Rudy, who has since been to the Effredaa Hospital and is now at home again, well on the way to recovery. Maude reminded me Alice was an aunt of Catherine Ziemer Morrow, the wife of Dr. Bert Allen Morrow of Shillington. 40 years ago, the Morrows (Elva, Bill and Bert Allen) and the Beams (Charlie and Dick) were singing in the Muddy Creek Reformed Church Choir.

The long chat with Maude was followed by a telephoned reunion with Catherine and Bert Allen. Catherine Ziemer Morrow is Alice’s niece. Catherine very kindly supplied us with a copy of Alice’s obituary. We are most grateful to Catherine and Maude for the biographical information on the late Alice Ziemer Brice. At the same time, we heartily thank David Luthy up in Canada for thinking of us. Without his help, we might never have learned that Alice Ziemer Brice of Adamstown was a Dutch poet.

Alice S. Ziemer Brice died in the Reading Hospital on June 24, 1986 at the age of 79. She was the widow of Elwood C. Brice, who died on May 16, 1976. Alice was born in Adamstown. She was the daughter of Henry H. and Alice K. (Stork) Ziemer. Mrs. Brice had been employed for 30 years as an interviewer by the federal and state employment service prior to her retirement in 1969. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Adamstown. She is survived by a stepson, two step­grandsons and three nieces.

Alice attended Hood College in Maryland for three years and was graduated from Catawba College in North Carolina. She was the sister of Harry S. Ziemer, M.D., who died in 1978. Catherine Morrow informs us that Alice was a world traveler, especially in Europe. She was greatly interested in all things German un abbadich Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch. Dale Sylvia Veith Boughton, 85, New Holland, passed away on Sunday, May 5.

She was the wife of the late Eugene “Gene” Sanford Boughton.

42nd Annual Memorial Day Program

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC) announced it will host its 42nd Annual Memorial Day Program on Sunday, May 26, at 2:00 p.m., rain or shine. Attendees

are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather. This year’s program is cosponsored by the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery Memorial Council and the Catholic War Veterans, Department of Pennsylvania. John Spruyt, director of IGNC, will welcome the audience. Nicholas Taylor, Chairman of the State

Veterans Commission will deliver the keynote address. Dave Brady, IGNC Memorial Council will serve as the master of ceremonies. The program will be held in the Pennsylvania Veterans Memorial.

Parking will be at MSC Industrial Supply Company, 100 MSC Drive, Jonestown, Pennsylvania located just

east of Fort Indiantown Gap. Shuttle bus transportation will begin running at 12:00 noon to and from the designated parking area to the Cemetery. If entering the area from the west attendees should follow the detour sign on Biddle road around the Post. There will be limited handicapped parking at the Cemetery itself.

The Avenue of Flags display on the Cemetery will be flown through Veterans Day Week. The Avenue of Flags is made up of casket flags that have been donated by Veterans’ families. State, territories, and service flags will also be flown. Casket Flag donations will be accepted before the program.

* On May 14, 1904, the first Olympic Games to be held in the United States opened in St. Louis, Missouri. The Games had initially been awarded to Chicago, but were later given to St. Louis to be staged in connection with the St. Louis World Exposition. Unfortunately, the Games were poorly organized and overshadowed by the fair.

* On May 15, 2009, General Electric, one of America’s most prestigious corporations, finally began its government­mandated efforts to clean up New York’s Hudson River, after decades of environmental damage and legal wrangling. The company had dumped harmful chemicals into the river for years and spent a fortune trying to avoid a cleanup.

* On May 17, 1885, Apache leader and medicine man Geronimo escaped from an Arizona reservation. After a year and a half of running, he and his 38 remaining followers surrendered the following September. Geronimo was relocated to Florida before finally being freed two years later.

A Sling and a Stone

Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:50 ­ “So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone.”

Don’t be afraid of impossible odds. But Saul replied, “You cannot go out against this Philistine to fight him. You are just a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” The contrast is clear. The odds are so stacked against David as the world sees it. Even the seasoned warriors were fearful of this giant and with good reason. Saul and the armies of Israel only see man. David sees God and depends on His deliverance. God loves the impossible situation. Circumstances

like this reveal God’s greatness and glory. He wants us to realize, “‘It’s not by might nor by power but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord.” (Zechariah 4:6). God is the one who delivers, not the chariot and the horse. God was regularly reminding Israel of this because so often the odds weren’t in their favor, and they had to depend on Him. Remember Moses while they were in battle? Moses held his hands and staff up. Israel would be winning the battle. When he put his staff and arms down, the Amalekites would begin to win. Finally, Aaron and Hur had to help him keep his arms and staff up to win the battle. So, don’t be afraid of impossible odds ­ “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13). Allow God’s past deliverance to boost present faith. David replied, “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep, and whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock, I went after it, struck it down, and delivered the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would grab it

by its fur, strike it down, and kill it. Your servant has killed lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.” David clearly applies the principle of past deliverance to ensure confidence for the present.

David added, “The LORD, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”

What a faith for a teenager.

Little is much when God is in it. “And David took his staff in his hand, selected five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag. And with his sling in hand, he approached the Philistine.” David realized quickly that Saul’s armor would only hinder him. He knew how to use a sling and a stone. His Lord would have to give the victory with the weapons of a shepherd not a soldier. I happen to believe that God put a lot more velocity behind that stone. The narrative said the stone sank into the giant’s forehead. David placed the stone, God powered it

Put your confidence in the Lord. But David said to the Philistine, “‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.’ As the Philistine started forward to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Then, David reached into his bag, took out a stone, and slung it, striking the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground.” I like the fact that he ran towards the giant. His confidence in the Lord was so evident at each turn. This leads us to the last takeaway.

Depend on God’s deliverance and give Him the glory when He delivers. 1st Samuel 17:47 ­ “That all the assembly shall know that the Lord does not deliver with a sword and a spear.” God deserves all the glory. Let’s be sure we give it to Him before everyone.

Facts About The Month

Of May

May is a festive month in many ways. Warm weather characterizes much, if not all, of May in many regions, compelling people to spend more time outdoors. And the spirit of summer starts to seep in as May flowers bloom. In fact, many people in the United States feel Memorial Day, an American holiday celebrated annually on the last Monday in May, marks the unofficial beginning of summer. That’s not all there is to know about the often festive fifth month of the year.

• Historians believe May is named after Maia, the goddess who embodied the concept of growth in ancient Roman religion and mythology. That makes sense, as May is the month when flowers and plants begin to blossom anew, inspiring a spirit of rejuvenation among individuals who are ready for warm weather and all the benefits it brings. The name “May” has evolved from the Latin word “Maius,” which is short for “mensis,” a word that Dictionary.com reports meant “Maia’s month.”

• The Kentucky Derby, sometimes characterized as “The most exciting two minutes in sports,” is held annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the Triple Crown, and the atmosphere at Churchill Downs embodies the festive spirit of May. The Kentucky Derby also is known as “The Run for the Roses.”

• Cinco de Mayo. Though it is a regional Mexican holiday, celebrating the Mexican army’s improbable defeat of the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, it has been co­opted in the U.S., where is has become a celebration of Mexican culture and cuisine.

• Though the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo are festive occasions, Memorial Day weekend is when many people up the celebratory ante in the fifth month of the year. Memorial Day is a solemn American holiday day that honors the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces, and many communities host parades on the morning of Memorial Day to honor those sacrifices and the country fallen soldiers fought to protect.

The Lancaster County Office of Aging, Lititz Senior Center, located at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street, Lititz, is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with lunch served at noon. There is no cost to attend.

Hinkletown Mennonite School Annual Servathon Makes A Difference

Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) held their annual Servathon week, where each HMS class does a service project at a local organization. This year, students along with teachers and parent volunteers, worked with ten local organizations to assist with tasks such as cleaning, mulching and planting, relief kit packing, and sorting and boxing food at a food bank. Pre-k students began

their Servathon journey by planting flowers at HMS to serve the school community.

The second grade class served in three ways at the Material Resource Center: packing school kits, packing hygiene kits, and recycling books. Each group knew their job and how to get it done. Students knew their work helped others. Moriah Martin, second grade, shared that the kits “were going to

schools in other countries where they don’t have what we have.” The hygiene kits were going to “Ukraine, to help people take care of themselves,” according to Judah Romanov.

Even the youngest students are learning how they can serve others. Kindergarten teacher Marilyn Martin shared about their service project at Fairmount Homes, a retirement community in

Ephrata: “When we go into the rooms, the residents’ faces just light up. The students’ made cards saying, ‘Bringing a bit of light your way’ and that is really what students are doing. They are sharing the love of Jesus, and putting into the practice the things they are learning in the classroom—God loves all people, be kind, serve others.”

helped with spring cleanup and mulching at REAL Life Community Center in Denver and at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church in Terre Hill.

Blood Pressure Cuffs Available At Lititz Library

It’s now as easy to check your blood pressure as it is to check out a book at the local library. The American Heart Association and WellSpan Health are introducing a blood pressure cuff loaner program at libraries across the region, the newest one at Lititz Public Library.

Blood pressure screenings will be provided by WellSpan Health at Lititz Public Library from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. every fourth Thursday of the month. Blood pressure cuffs will be available for anyone to check out from the library to help people with hypertension self-monitor their blood pressure at home, and one will always be available on site for library patrons to check their blood pressure when visiting the library. All cuffs will come with in-

structions in English and Spanish. All sites receive ten cuffs - one to have on site at all times for patrons to use while in the library and nine to loan out.

“So often high blood pressure does not cause any symptoms so you may have high blood pressure and not know it,” said Alisha Howard, LPN, ambulatory clinical operations super-

visor for WellSpan Cardiology. “Being able to stop into the library to check your blood pressure will allow you to know what your numbers are at that moment. You can take those numbers to your family doctor so they can assess you further and make recommendations to better control your blood pressure.”

screening and cuff loaner programs will be launching at Gettysburg Library and Coyle Free Library in Chambersburg later this year. The program first launched in February 2023 at Guthrie Memorial Library in Hanover. Programs at Lebanon Community Library and Ephrata Public Library were added later in 2023.

Pickleball is an American original. The popularity of pickleball has risen sharply in recent years, and a recent report from the Association of Pickleball Professionals indicated more than 36 million people played the sport across the United States in 2022. But pickleball is much older than its recent participation boom suggests. According to USA Pickleball, the sport is the brainchild of U.S. congressman Joel Pritchard and businessman Bill Bell. In 1965, Prichard and Bell arrived at the former’s home on Bainbridge Island in Washington to find their families lounging around.

Pritchard’s property had an old badminton court, but no equipment. So the players improvised, using ping pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. The net,

initially around 60 inches high, was lowered once the players realized how well the ball bounced on the asphalt playing surface. The following weekend Pritchard

introduced the game to another friend, Barney McCallum, and the two men and Bell soon created rules for the game that is now known as pickleball.

Many adults fondly recall their days at summer camp.
