It has been 78 years since the Canadian men’s basketball team earned a medal at the Summer Olympics. But a crop of NBA talent from the Great White North could get the country back in medal contention at the Paris 2024 Summer Games.
It’s shaping up to be the best group for Canadian Olympic basketball in more than 20 years. The official roster has not been announced, but OntarioBets.com, as part of our Ontario sports betting coverage, put together hypothetical odds to see who will likely make the official roster.

These odds are exclusive to OntarioBets.com and won’t be found on Ontario sportsbook apps. Canada plays its group stage opener in the 2024 Paris Olympics on July 27. The gold medal game is Aug. 10.
In recent years, Canada has produced a host of top-level pro talent, including players such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, R.J. Barrett, Kelly Olynyk and Jamal Murray. Then you have to account for potential Canadian Olympic team role players such as Lu Dort, Dillon Brooks, Andrew Wiggins and incoming rookie Zach Edey.
Canada won a bronze medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, defeating the United States in the third-place game to earn the nation’s first medal ever at that competition. So there’s reason for hope that 2024 could be Canada’s year for men’s basketball excellence in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.
As for the ongoing NBA playoffs, check out our Ontario NBA betting guide for the two conference final series and the NBA Finals.
We give all but 100% certain odds (-100000, to be exact) on a handful of NBA stars to represent Canada in the Paris Games. That translates to a 99.9% implied probability. Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Barrett of the New York Knicks, Olynyk of the Toronto Raptors and Murray of the Denver Nuggets will be locks to make the Canadian men’s team this summer (assuming they stay healthy).
Throw in former Thunder guard Lu Dort and Houston Rockets mainstay Dillon Brooks and you have a pretty good rotation. Canada could go deeper by adding NBA talent like former No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins, former Celtics and Mavericks forward Dwight Powell, Edey and Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin, among other candidates. Players straight out of college don’t always make an Olympic roster this deep but Edey, a two-time College National Player of the Year at Purdue, could be the exception. See our Zach Edey NBA Draft projection for where he might wind up after the June draft.
The team will draw interest throughout Canada but Toronto fans might have a special interest in this roster. Of our top 12 candidates to make the Canadian Olympic basketball team, seven were born in the city: Gilgeous-Alexander, Barrett, Olynyk, Powell, Wiggins, Alexander-Walker and Edey. Three others on our list were born elsewhere in Ontario (Jamal Murray in Kitchener, Dillon Brooks in Mississauga and Shaedon Sharpe in London).
All of this talent could propel Canada to new heights in Paris.
The final roster has not been announced yet. The roster is expected to be announced late June or July 2024. The men’s Olympic basketball tournament is July 27 to Aug. 10, 2024.
Historically, Team Canada hasn’t been great – the nation’s last appearance was at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, where Canada finished seventh and the best result was a silver medal in 1936. Canada has qualified for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics and it is expected to be one of the best and most competitive teams in history for the country during the Olympics. The team is projected to have numerous top NBA talents joining its roster in Paris.
