Sony announced on Thursday that its new I Know What You Did Last Summer film from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) will be released via Columbia Pictures on July 18, 2025.
Written by Kaytin Robinson & Sam Lansky, off a script by Leah McKendrick, the film’s plot is under wraps for now, but stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt are expected to return. Neal Moritz is producing.
Launching the careers of Hewitt, Prinze, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe, the franchise kicked off with 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, which introduced viewers to four friends who’ve accidentally run over a pedestrian while driving on a coastal road one night. In their panic, they decide to dispose of the body in the ocean and vow never to speak of the incident again. However, a year later, they start receiving cryptic messages from someone who seems to know about their dark secret. The situation escalates as they are stalked and attacked by a mysterious figure wielding a hook.
The success of the original film led to a number of sequels, including 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and 2006’s I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. In 2021, the franchise was reimagined as a television series that debuted on Prime Video.
News of the date for I Know What You Did Last Summer follows Universal’s announcement of numerous pieces of release date news. This included Blumhouse’s thriller The Woman in the Yard being set to open on Friday, March 28, 2025, with Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse’s Drop debuting on Friday, April 11, 2025 and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 to scare up box office on Friday, December 5, 2025.

If the original actors come back,i will be happy for them :).
Save Brandy for the sequel to this one, like Kirby in Scream VI and focus this one on Julie and Ray and the new generation.
I hope they’ll acknowledge I Still Know What You Did Last Summer existence and Brandy Norwood returns too. Do it the way Scream 5 did it. Bring back all the legacy characters and introduce new ones. It’s that easy.
Brandy died in the franchise so that won’t work. Only Love & Freddie survived. But I’m sure there will be room for a new next-gen beautiful woman of color to join the mix ala Kaliii.
I imagine they will be parents now to fresh-faced teens who become embroiled in the hooked fisherman lore.
Karla (Brandy’s character) didn’t die. She survived. Did you even watch the movie?
Oops, I forgot! It was a long time ago. I only watched it once. Late-90s slashers rarely preserved three lead characters at the end.
Even though STILL isn’t respected — it was enjoyable enough and the island location/radio call-in fake trip was kind of clever.
I KNOW and URBAN LEGENDS were fairy memorable entries in the SCREAM Slasher Boom compared to the rest of the lot – although Disturbing Behavior and The Faculty had their charms too.
But that movie blew.
What, you didn’t like Jack Black’s white rasta?
