PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man convicted of robbing and assaulting a mail carrier will spend 40 months behind bars, according to U.S. District Attorney Zachary Cunha.

Juan Bautista Rosario-Sandoval, 31, pleaded guilty last December to charges of conspiracy to assault and rob a U.S. Postal Service carrier and conspiracy to possess more than 500 grams of cocaine.

Cunha said Bautista Rosario-Sandoval and another person tried to forcibly take a package being delivered to a Broad Street address from a postal carrier in September 2021.

When the carrier refused, Cunha said the suspected opened the doors to the USPS vehicle and assaulted the carrier before taking off with the package.

Cunha said Bautista Rosario-Sandoval admitted to receiving several packages of cocaine through the mail, with weights in excess of 5,000 grams.

Bautista Rosario-Sandoval, who’s from the Dominican Republic, will face immigration proceedings upon completing his sentence, according to Cunha.
