He is the man who saved the life of a driver who was trapped inside a Chevrolet Corvette, following a crash that reportedly occurred after street-racing a BMW M5 in New York. He pulled him out of the burning sports car, risking his own life.
Lieutenant Richard Cannon is the name of the hero. He is a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department, but he was off-duty the night of the incident. He was driving home from State Island, with his wife and seven-year-old son at around 3 AM one night when he saw a blue Chevrolet Corvette C8 and a black F90 M5 BMW speeding past him.

Just seconds later, he saw the cars in flames on Belt Parkway in Brooklyn. The two of them had crashed into each other and caught fire. Lieutenant Cannon pulled over, called 911, and rushed to the crash scene.

The occupants of the BMW M5 were evacuating themselves upon his arrival and were unharmed. But the Corvette driver was trapped unconscious in the car. He tried to open the driver's door, but it was stuck, so he went to the other side, unbuckled the seat belt, pulled him out, and laid him down on the grass.

The 30-year-old driver of the blue Corvette was unconscious and had a deep laceration on his head. The firefighter who saved him says he can't tell if he suffered burns on his back from the fire.

A fire engine arrived at the scene and started working to put out the fire, while Patient Care started resuscitating the driver. He was eventually taken to the hospital.

The right man at the right place at the right time, Richard Cannon modestly says that probably anyone would have done the same even off-duty because they are trained and supposed to react. "It was a teachable moment not to drive like an idiot on the Belt Parkway," he says. "My son probably saw more than some seven-year-olds want to see."

The BMW occupants blame the Corvette driver for the crash and accuse him of being overconfident in his driving skills. In a conversation with the New York Post, the driver of the BMW M5 claimed that he was driving legally while the Corvette was hot dogging around him, trying to challenge him to a street race. He says that right now, he is just happy to be alive. His friends insist that the Belt Parkway is not a racetrack. The area has turned into a speed lovers' favorite for the past few months.

NYPD is running an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Both cars are totaled while the Corvette driver is in critical but stable condition.
