Has Citizen Kane become less popular or beloved these days? And if so, why?
Don't get me wrong, obviously critics still rate it as one of the best movies. And to me, it'll always be in my top 10. However, if you ask an average person on Twitter or even here on Reddit (especially Popculturechat), you won't hear many people saying Citizen Kane is their favorite. On top of that, if you look at the IMDb top 250, it's not even in the top 50 anymore and it's not even on the Letterboxd top 250.
And before anyone says anything, no they don't bother me or at least that much in case anyone mentions it. I can form my own opinion, and I'll always love that movie. To me, my most cherished list is always the TSPDT list and they almost always have CK at #1.
Watched it a few weeks ago still works for me.
I don’t judge it against current movies or current production values.
I’ll watch Casablanca this weekend at some point and it's the same deal.
It's not just Citizen Kane but virtually everything from that era. It's fair to say young people today aren't as enamored with the golden age of cinema as young people used to be. We're just not as connected to it. Too much time has passed, there's been too much societal change, and frankly too much cinema since then that can grab our attention. Cinephiles appreciate those old films. The general public, less and less.
Yeah what id say is youd almost have to be an elitist snob to rank citizen kane highly these days.
What I mean by that is film has evolved so much since then and is so widespread and oversaturated.
It really isn’t anything special by todays standards but it was when it was released. It hasn’t aged super bad but no, it’s nothing I would recommend to anyone unless your interested in the historic aspect.
Because the youth today are already brainwashed to the point where everything before them is automatically invalid and irrelevant. They are not carrying the torch.
