Brainerd's Bob Rofidal has returned to the Gopher baseball lineup after recovering from a broken finger. A sophomore, he was Minnesota's No. 2 catcher until hit by a pitch. Coach Dick Siebert said hitting is Rofidal's strongest suit, causing him to be used in the outfield as well. He was a three-sport star at Brainerd High School.

20 years ago (2004)

The nationwide hunt for murder suspect William Gene Myears, 25, continues. He was charged with two counts of second degree murder in the death of Erika Dalquist, 21, whose skeletal remains were found recently. There is speculation he may be in North Carolina, and the FBI is investigating all tips.

30 years ago (1994)

Crow Wing County needs a new airport runway or a new landfill. Anything less won't fly with the Federal Aviation Administration. The landfill, which is 3.2 miles from the end of the runway, was OK when the landfill was built. Then the FAA changed its rules, now requiring a 5-mile distance.

40 years ago (1984)

60 years ago (1964)

80 years ago (1944)

1st Lt. Glen Nelson, Brainerd, may be one of the most traveled soldiers in the army. He went with the 194th Tank BN to the Philippines, and was returning to the U.S. for officer's school when war broke out. He then went with a tank unit to England, then to North Africa with Gen. Patton, and now through Sicily to Italy, always on the front lines.

 

100 years ago (1924)

Brainerd High School turned in another victory when they defeated Little Falls 14-1 yesterday. Zakariasen pitched one-hit ball. Lyddon and Wally Engbretson hit triples and Larson a double as the Blue and White went on a 14-hit batting rampage.
